Don’t Stay on the Fence

“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”

Revelation 3:15–16 (NKJV)

When it comes to following Jesus, there is no neutral ground. The Bible makes it clear that living half-committed, half-hearted, or “on the fence” is dangerous. Jesus warns in Revelation that lukewarm believers—those who try to hold on to both the world and Christ—are unacceptable to Him and He will spit them out of His mouth.

“So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” (Revelation 3:16)

Many in recovery face this temptation. The thought is, “I’ll give some of my life to God, but I’ll still keep one foot in my old ways.” But Jesus said in Matthew 6:24, No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” Divided loyalty is not loyalty at all.

Joshua challenged Israel in the same way: “And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve … But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15 NKJV). The call is clear—choose. Decide. Do not waver.

Fence-sitting keeps people stuck in cycles of addiction, sin, and compromise. But once you step fully into Christ, you find true freedom. James 1:8 reminds us, “he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” Recovery requires stability, and stability comes only through a whole-hearted surrender to Jesus Christ.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. Am I trying to live with one foot in the world and one foot in Christ?
  2. What compromises am I making that keep me “lukewarm”?
  3. What choices am I making that show that I am fully committed to Jesus?
  4. What choices am I making that show I am not fully committed to Jesus?
  5. Why am I delaying full surrender to manage life my way?
  6. How does being “on the fence” affect my recovery and my walk with the LORD?
  7. What would it look like today if I fully chose Christ without hesitation?
  8. Who in my life can hold me accountable to live fully devoted to the LORD?

Prayer

Abba Father, I confess that at times I have been lukewarm, trying to keep one foot in the world while claiming to follow You. I repent. Please forgive me for wavering and for my divided heart. Today, I choose You fully. Strengthen me to live completely surrendered to Jesus. Remove any compromise in my life and give me courage to stand firm in recovery and in faith. I want to serve You with my whole heart, now and forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
