“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

The fight doesn’t end the day you get sober. The battle often gets louder. Satan knows your weak spots, and he will whisper, “Just one more time…” But you are not powerless — you are equipped in Christ, through His Holy Spirit, to overcome.
Addiction doesn’t just attack the body — it attacks the soul. Even after you’ve been set free, the enemy will try to pull you back into bondage. His strategy has not changed since Eden: lie, tempt, and destroy (John 10:10).
When Satan whispers, “It’s just one time, no one will know,” he is speaking his native language — because he is the father of lies (John 8:44). But here’s the truth: You are a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and you no longer have to obey the voice of your former master.
God gives us a clear strategy:
- Submit to God. This means yield every thought, craving, and moment of temptation to Him. Talk to Him in real-time: “Lord, I’m being tempted right now. Help me.”
- Resist the devil. Resisting is active. It means saying “no” with your will, your mouth, and your feet. If you have to, walk away, call a brother or sister in Christ, or blast worship music to shift your focus.
- Stand on God’s Word. Jesus defeated Satan in the wilderness by saying, “It is written” (Matthew 4:4). You can do the same. Speak Scripture out loud over your temptation until the enemy flees.
Remember: Temptation is not sin. Acting on it is. The enemy wants you to think you’ve already failed just because the thought came. But God’s Word says in 1 Corinthians 10:13:
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”
Your escape route is already there — you just need to take it. Every time you resist, you grow stronger. Every time you submit to God, your freedom becomes more solid.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
- When temptation comes, what are my first thoughts and how can I bring them under Christ’s authority faster?
- What practical “escape routes” do I need to have in place (phone call list, worship playlist, safe spaces)?
- How does knowing I am a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) change how I view these temptations?
- What patterns or times of day make me most vulnerable to temptation, and how can I prepare for them?
- What lies about my addiction am I still tempted to believe, and what Scriptures can replace them with truth?
- Who in my life can I call immediately when Satan whispers to go back, and am I willing to be honest with them?
- How can I celebrate small victories when I resist, so I reinforce the habit of walking in freedom?

Prayer:
Abba Father,
Thank You for setting me free from the chains of addiction. I confess that sometimes I still hear the enemy’s whispers trying to pull me back. Right now, I submit every thought, craving, and fear to You. Strengthen me to resist the devil, just as Your Word says. Remind me that I am a new creation and that sin has no power over me anymore. Fill me with Your Spirit so that I may walk in victory today.
