When the Bible warns about sorcery, it’s not talking about fairy tales or card tricks. The Greek word used is pharmakeia — the root of our English words “pharmacy” and “pharmaceuticals.” God is sounding the alarm: there is a spiritual danger in allowing anything to control your mind, alter your perception of reality, or open you to deception.
“Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
~ Galatians 5:19-21
In Galatians 5:20, the word “sorcery” is translated from the Greek word pharmakeia (φαρμακεία). This term referred to the use of prescription psychiatric drugs, prescription painkillers, illegal drugs, alcohol, potions, and spells in occult practices. Ancient sorcerers used mind-altering substances to connect with demonic spirits, manipulate others, and escape reality.
Today, pharmakeia is alive and well — not just in witchcraft, but in the widespread use of drugs that affect the mind. Whether it’s illegal street drugs, recreational marijuana, or even certain psychotropic prescriptions, we are warned about anything that puts our mind under a power other than the Holy Spirit.
Why This Matters for Believers
The mind is the battlefield where spiritual warfare is fought.
Romans 12:2:
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
How can we renew our mind if it is chemically suppressed, numbed, or distorted? Satan wants to keep believers sedated, distracted, and passive so they are unable to fully hear God’s voice and walk in victory.
Pharmakeia and Addiction
Addiction is bondage. Jesus came to set captives free.
John 8:36:
“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
Mind-altering substances often start as coping mechanisms but quickly become spiritual strongholds. They dull the conscience, open doors to temptation, and keep a believer from dealing with the root issues of pain, trauma, and sin through Christ. Included in these mind altering substances are ALL psychiatric drugs, prescription painkillers and alcohol as well. Let’s not forget weed!
A Warning for the End Times
Pharmakeia is specifically mentioned as a reason for God’s coming judgment.
Revelation 18:23:
“…For your merchants were the great men of the earth, for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived.”
This shows that a global deception will involve pharmakeia — prescription psychiatric drugs, prescription painkillers, illegal drugs, alcohol, potions, or systems that control and manipulate the masses. The enemy uses altered states of mind to lead people away from truth and into destruction.
Questions to Ask Yourself
- In what ways have I used substances to escape emotional pain instead of running to Jesus for healing?
- Do I truly believe Jesus can give me peace without the help of chemicals or substances?
- How have my choices about medication or drug use affected my ability to think clearly, pray, and hear God’s voice?
- Am I willing to go through the discomfort of detox and allow God to restore my mind?
- Have I invited the Holy Spirit to take full control of my thoughts, emotions, and body?
- How do I respond when I feel anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed — do I seek God first?
- If Jesus came back today, would I be sober-minded, alert, and ready to meet Him face-to-face?

Prayer
Abba Father,
I come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, my savior. I renounce every connection to pharmakeia — every substance, pill, alcohol, or drug that has dulled my mind or distracted me from Your presence. I ask You to cleanse my body and restore my mind so that I can think clearly, walk in truth, and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Deliver me from every stronghold and teach me to seek You for my peace and healing. Help me to find a doctor of Your choice to detox me. Make me sober-minded, watchful, and ready for Jesus’ return.
