Should I Stay or Should I go?

Many once walked with God but have turned away. Others stumble yet return in tears. One path ends in death; the other leads back to grace. Knowing the difference could mean the difference between deception and redemption.

“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.”
1 Timothy 4:1

Apostasy vs. Backsliding

These two words—apostasy and backsliding—are often used interchangeably, but in God’s eyes, they mean very different things. Understanding the distinction is crucial for anyone walking the road of faith and recovery in Christ.

Apostasy is a complete falling away—a deliberate, conscious rejection of the faith one once professed. It is not a moment of weakness or a stumble; it is the willful decision to turn away from Christ and His truth.
“For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit… if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance.”
Hebrews 6:4-6

Apostasy is spiritual rebellion. It is when someone decides that God’s Word is no longer truth, that sin is no longer sin, and that they no longer need the Savior. It is not a battle of the flesh—it’s a betrayal of the heart.

In contrast, backsliding is a drifting away from closeness with God, often through sin, neglect, or distraction, but not through denial of Christ Himself. It’s when we take our eyes off Jesus and begin to slip back into old ways.
“Return, you backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings.”
Jeremiah 3:22

The backslider still hears God’s voice calling. They still feel conviction. They still long for restoration, even if shame and guilt cloud that desire. Like the prodigal son, they may wander into a far country, but, at an appointed time, they hear the Father’s love calling them home.

Apostasy, however, is different. It’s when the heart hardens beyond repentance. It’s when one says, “I no longer believe.” The apostate doesn’t merely stumble—they turn their back on the very light that once saved them.
“For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins.”
Hebrews 10:26

So how do we discern where we stand? The backslider’s story can end in glorious restoration. Apostasy’s story ends in separation—unless God grants repentance before the heart completely hardens. That’s why Scripture warns us so urgently:
“Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God.”
Hebrews 3:12

Backsliding is curable through humility, confession, and return to God. Apostasy is preventable only through steadfast faith, obedience, submission to follow Jesus Christ, and daily dependence on the Holy Spirit.

If you feel far from God today, know this—if you still care that you’re far, then you are not apostate. The Spirit is still tugging at your heart. Don’t wait. Come home to your Father’s arms of mercy before distance becomes denial.

Questions for Self-Examination

  1. Where in my life have I allowed compromise or comfort to replace conviction?
  2. When was the last time I felt the presence of God deeply, and what changed since then?
  3. Have I replaced time in God’s Word with voices from the world that contradict His truth?
  4. Do I still respond to conviction, or have I learned to silence it?
  5. What keeps me from returning fully to God when I sense Him calling me back?
  6. How have pride, resentment, anger, or disappointment affected my faith?
  7. What daily steps could I take to rekindle my love and hunger for Jesus Christ?

Prayer to Abba Father

Abba Father,
I come before You with humility, knowing how easily my heart can wander. Forgive me for the times I have drifted from Your truth and chased after things that do not satisfy. Strengthen me to walk faithfully, to cling to Your Word, and to resist the lies that lead to unbelief.

Lord Jesus, protect my heart from hardness and deceit. Rekindle in me a holy fire that will not be extinguished by temptation or doubt. If I have backslidden, draw me back to You. Heal me, restore me, and make me steadfast once again.

Thank You that Your mercy is new every morning and that Your arms are always open. Keep me anchored in faith until I see You face to face in Heaven.

In Jesus’ mighty name,
Amen.
