LETTING GO OF RELIGION TO FIND A RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS

There comes a moment in every believer’s journey — especially in recovery — when you realize that checking boxes and saying the right words isn’t the same as knowing Jesus. Religion can make you look clean on the outside while you’re still bleeding on the inside. But Jesus didn’t die to give you a system — He died to give you Himself.

Why This Study Matters in Faith-Based Recovery

If you’ve come out of addiction, you already know what it’s like to live bound by chains. Religion can become another kind of chain if you’re not careful — one made of guilt, performance, and fear. True life and recovery in Christ is about obeying Jesus’ commandments and walking in His love and grace.  Love is spelled, ‘obedience to God’.

Many people leave one kind of bondage only to walk into another — trying to be “good enough” for God, rather than letting His Spirit transform them from the inside out. This study will help you trade empty ritual for a living relationship — so your faith becomes real, personal, and freeing.

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
John 8:36

Religion teaches you to do; Jesus teaches you to be. Religion says “try harder”; Jesus says “come closer.”

When Jesus walked the earth, He spent His time with the broken, the outcasts, and the ones the religious elite had given up on. He didn’t choose the polished or the powerful — He chose fishermen, tax collectors, and former sinners. Why? Because they had nothing to prove. They were ready to receive.

“This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” Matthew 15:8–9

You can read the Bible every day, go to church, and still miss the heart of God if you’re only following rules. Religion focuses on behavior. Relationship transforms the heart. When the heart changes, the behavior follows.

In recovery, this difference matters more than ever. If you’re trying to fix yourself to be “worthy” of God’s love, you’ll burn out. But when you realize Jesus already made you worthy through His blood, you’ll finally find peace.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Ephesians 2:8–9

God isn’t asking for performance — He’s asking for presence. He wants to walk with you daily, not just when you feel spiritual. He wants to be the One you turn to, not the One you try to impress.

Religion leaves you exhausted; relationship leaves you restored. Religion points out your failures; relationship points to the Cross. Religion says you must work to get to God; relationship says God came down to get to you.

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8

If you’ve ever felt unworthy to approach Him, remember this: Jesus didn’t save you to make you religious. He saved you to make you His. He wants your heart, not your checklist. The moment you let go of trying to “earn” His love is the moment you truly begin to live in it.

Questions to Ask Yourself for Self-Examination

  1. Have I been trying to please God through performance instead of intimacy with Him?

  2. What rules or traditions have made me feel distant from God instead of drawing me closer?

  3. Do I view God as a Father who loves me or as a Judge waiting for me to fail?

  4. How do I respond when I fall short — with guilt or with repentance and trust in His grace?

  5. What does a daily relationship with Jesus look like to me — not in theory, but in practice?

  6. Am I more focused on being seen as “good” or being transformed by His goodness?

  7. How can I replace religious duty with genuine connection to His Spirit?

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” Romans 8:16

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10

Prayer

Abba Father,
I don’t want religion — I want You. Please forgive me for the times I’ve tried to earn Your love instead of simply receiving it. Teach me to rest in Your grace and to walk in true relationship with Jesus. Help me to know Your voice, to follow Your Holy Spirit, and to love You from the heart. I surrender my need to perform and invite You to transform me instead. Thank You for loving me as I am and for drawing me closer each day.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
