What Emotion Do You Avoid the Most?

There is an emotion inside you that you’ve spent years running from — an emotion you push down, bury, silence, and escape every time it tries to surface. You feel it rising… and you shut it down. But here’s the truth: What you avoid in your emotions will control your life more than anything you face honestly. And in recovery, God is calling you to stop running and start healing.

Why This Study Matters in Faith-Based Recovery

Addiction thrives on emotional avoidance. You didn’t just use to get high — you used to escape. Escape pain. Escape fear. Escape anger. Escape rejection. Escape memories you could not bear to relive. Recovery with Jesus isn’t just about putting down a substance; it’s about letting Him into the emotional places you never allowed yourself to feel.

Faith-based recovery requires courage — the courage to face what you’ve been avoiding your entire life. When you avoid emotions, they become unhealed wounds that control your behaviors, your relationships, and your spiritual walk. But when you bring them to the feet of Jesus, He heals what you’ve been afraid to face.

“He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3

What Emotion Are You Afraid to Face?

Every person in recovery has an emotion they fear the most. For some it’s grief — the weight of loss. For others it’s anger — a fire they can’t control. For many it’s shame — a constant whisper that they are unworthy of love. And for others, it’s fear — the feeling that paralyzes and suffocates.

But no matter which emotion you avoid, God already knows it’s there.

You never hide your emotions from Him. You only hide them from yourself.

Scripture reminds you:
“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.” Psalm 34:18

God draws near to the exact emotion you’re running from. When you refuse to feel it, you refuse to heal from it. Avoided emotions are like infections — they don’t go away, they spread. They influence your habits, sabotage your relationships, and distort your identity.

Jesus never asked you to pretend. He asked you to come to Him.
He said:
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

You can’t come to Jesus carrying a mask. You have to come carrying the truth.

When you finally stop avoiding what you feel, God begins to reveal what’s underneath it — the root. Anger often hides grief. Fear often hides abandonment. Shame often hides lies you’ve believed for years. And hurt often hides the unmet need for love.

God wants to heal not just the emotion, but the wound beneath it.

Emotions are not your enemy — they are invitations to deeper healing.
You don’t have to fear feeling anymore. When the Holy Spirit guides you, no emotion will overtake you. Jesus walks into the dark places inside you not to expose you, but to restore you.

Healing begins when avoidance ends.

Questions to Ask Yourself for Self-Examination

  1. Which emotion do I run from the fastest, and what makes it feel so threatening to me?

  2. What is the earliest memory I have where this emotion first became overwhelming?

  3. What do I believe would happen if I actually allowed myself to feel this emotion fully?

  4. How has avoiding this emotion shaped my relationships, reactions, or decisions?

  5. What lie about myself or God has been attached to this emotion for years?

  6. How has this avoided emotion shown up in unhealthy coping patterns in my life?

  7. What would it look like today to bring this emotion honestly before Jesus?

Prayer

Abba Father, I come to You with honesty. I acknowledge the emotion I have been avoiding, and I ask You to help me face it with courage. Show me what lies beneath it, and shine Your healing light into every wounded place. I no longer want to escape or hide. I want to be whole. I ask You to walk with me as I feel what I’ve been afraid to feel. Heal my heart, renew my mind, and strengthen my spirit. Thank You for being gentle with me and patient with me. I surrender this emotion to You completely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
