Are You a Prodigal Son or Daughter?

A Call From God to Come Home Today

If you’ve wandered from God—whether through addiction, compromise, rebellion, or quiet disobedience—there comes a moment when the Holy Spirit whispers, “This is not who you are anymore.” That awakening inside you is not shame… it is the Father calling you home. Prodigals don’t stay gone forever. When your heart stirs, heaven is already moving toward you.

Why This Study Is Needed in Faith-Based Recovery

In faith-based recovery, many people try to fix their addiction while remaining far from God. But the truth is: relapse, wandering, or spiritual drift always happens when someone begins living in the “far country” spiritually. This study is needed because true recovery is not just sobriety—it is restoration. It’s realizing that you have drifted, awakening to the truth, and returning to the Father with full surrender. Healing begins the moment you stop running.

Luke 15:17 – “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!’”

The prodigal son’s story mirrors what happens in addiction, relapse, or spiritual wandering. At first, the far country looks appealing—freedom without accountability, pleasure without consequences, control without surrender. But sin always overpromises and underdelivers. Before long, the prodigal was empty, filthy, starving, and alone. That is the nature of any life lived apart from God.

Yet the turning point is powerful: “He came to himself.” This moment was not shame—it was revelation. It was God opening his eyes. It was mercy, not condemnation.

Maybe you have reached that moment. Maybe you see the mess, the distance, or the consequences. Maybe you feel the Holy Spirit tugging at you, showing you where your choices have taken you. That awareness is our Father calling you home—not to punish you, but to restore you.

When the prodigal arose and came home, the Father didn’t fold His arms or demand explanations. He ran towards his son. He covered him. He embraced him. He restored him. That is what God does when you repent and return to Him.

But you must take the first step.
You must stand up from the pigpen.
You must leave the sin, the addiction, and the rebellion behind.
You must walk toward Him in obedience.

God is not angry at you for wandering.
He is waiting for you to return.

So ask yourself: Are you a prodigal son or daughter?
And if so… is today the day you come home?

Questions to Ask Yourself for Self-Examination

  1. What areas of my life show that I’ve wandered from God, even if only in my heart?

  2. What “far country” habits or mindsets have I been holding onto instead of surrendering fully to Jesus Christ?

  3. What emotions rise up when I imagine walking back toward the Father—fear, shame, hope, joy, or relief?

  4. What lies have kept me from returning sooner, and how do those lies contradict Scripture?

  5. What is God asking me to repent for today that I’ve been avoiding?

  6. How would my life look different if I truly returned to God with my whole heart?

  7. What does my Abba Father’s open arms mean to me personally in this season of my life?

Prayer

Abba Father, I come before You with a humbled heart. I confess that I have wandered, and I ask You to forgive me for every step I’ve taken away from Your will. I thank You for calling me back, even when I didn’t deserve it. I turn from my sin, my rebellion, and my old ways. I choose to come home to You today. Run toward me as I run toward You. Restore me, cleanse me, and teach me how to walk in obedience. I receive Your love, Your forgiveness, and Your mercy. I surrender my life completely to You again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
