YOU ARE NOT TOO BROKEN

If you believe you must clean yourself up before coming to Jesus, you are carrying a burden He never asked you to bear. That belief keeps countless people trapped in shame, distance, and silence—right when Jesus is calling them closer.

Recovery exposes weakness. It brings past failures, relapses, regrets, and self-disgust into the light. When shame is left unchallenged, it whispers lies: God is tired of you. You’ve failed too much. You’re not worthy to come near Him.

Many people delay turning fully to Jesus because they feel unqualified. But recovery is not about becoming good enough for God—it is about discovering you never had to be.

This study confronts the lie that worthiness precedes grace. In recovery, that lie is deadly. Truth brings freedom.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

Jesus never said, “Come to Me once you’ve improved.” He never required spiritual maturity, emotional stability, or moral perfection as entry requirements. He called the weary, the broken, the sinful, and the ashamed.

Scripture makes this unmistakably clear:

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8

Jesus did not wait for change before offering love. Love came first—and transformation followed.

Feeling “not good enough” is often rooted in misunderstanding grace. Grace is not a reward for progress; it is the starting point.

Jesus addressed this directly when religious people looked down on sinners:

“Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
Mark 2:17

If you are broken, you qualify. If you are struggling, you are exactly who Jesus came for.

Shame convinces you that your past disqualifies you, but Scripture says otherwise:

“This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.”
1 Timothy 1:15

Paul did not hide his past—he highlighted it to magnify grace.

You may feel unworthy to pray, read Scripture, or approach God. But God invites honesty, not performance:

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart—These, O God, You will not despise.”
Psalm 51:17

Jesus does not recoil at brokenness. He draws near to it.

And when shame tells you to stay away, Scripture commands the opposite:

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Hebrews 4:16

Boldly—not hesitantly. Not after improvement. Not once you feel worthy.

If you are waiting to feel good enough, you will wait forever. But if you come as you are, Jesus will meet you there—and He will not leave you the same.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF FOR SELF-EXAMINATION

  1. What beliefs do I hold about worthiness that Scripture does not support?

  2. How has shame influenced my relationship with God?

  3. Where am I delaying surrender because I think I need to improve first?

  4. What parts of my story do I believe disqualify me from grace?

  5. How would my recovery change if I believed Jesus welcomes me as I am?

  6. What fears surface when I consider coming honestly before God?

  7. What would it look like to approach Jesus without hiding or pretending?

BIBLE VERSES FOR MEDITATION

1 John 1:9

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 8:1

“A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench.”
Isaiah 42:3

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,”
Ephesians 2:8

PRAYER

Abba Father,
I come to You carrying shame I was never meant to hold. I confess that I have believed lies about my worth and Your willingness to receive me. Teach me to come as I am, not as I think I should be. Where I feel unqualified, remind me that grace is a gift, not a reward. Help me lay down hiding, striving, and self-condemnation. I choose to believe Your Word over my feelings. Thank You for welcoming me even now.
In Jesus name, Amen.
