THIS WORLD IS NOT YOUR HOME

If this world feels heavy, broken, and disappointing, that is not weakness—it is awareness. You were never designed to settle here. The ache you feel for something better is not escapism; it is eternity written into your soul. You are not lost. You are passing through.

Recovery often exposes a deeper truth: substances once helped you tolerate a world that never felt like home. When those crutches are removed, the discomfort can feel unbearable unless you understand why it exists. If you try to build Heaven on earth, relapse becomes tempting. But when you understand that this life is temporary and your true home is eternal, suffering gains purpose and endurance becomes possible.

“For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come.”
Hebrews 13:14

Scripture is clear: this world is temporary, fragile, and passing away. Trying to anchor your identity, peace, or fulfillment here will always leave you empty.

“While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
2 Corinthians 4:18

Recovery becomes unbearable when you expect permanent comfort in a temporary place. God never promised ease here—He promised presence.

You are a pilgrim, not a settler.

“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.”
Hebrews 11:13

Pilgrims travel light. They do not cling tightly to what can be lost. Addiction thrives when you cling to this world for relief. Freedom grows when your hope shifts to what cannot be shaken.

Jesus Himself made this clear.

“In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.”
John 14:2

Your future is not uncertain—it is prepared. Heaven is not symbolic; it is real. And the knowledge of where you are going gives strength to endure where you are.

“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Philippians 3:20

You are not homeless—you are headed home.

QUESTIONS FOR SELF-EXAMINATION

  1. In what ways have you expected this world to give you peace it cannot provide?

  2. How has focusing on earthly comfort affected your recovery journey?

  3. What fears surface when you think about letting go of this world’s security?

  4. How would your daily choices change if eternity guided them more clearly?

  5. What does being a “pilgrim” look like in your current season of life?

  6. Where is God inviting you to loosen your grip on temporary things?

  7. How does the promise of Heaven reshape the way you endure suffering now?

BIBLE VERSES FOR MEDITATION

“Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul.”
1 Peter 2:11

“For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”
2 Corinthians 5:1

“He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.”
John 12:25

“The world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”
1 John 2:17

PRAYER

Abba Father,
I confess that I have often tried to make this world my resting place. When pain came, I searched for relief instead of eternal hope. Re-anchor my heart in what is everlasting. Help me live as a pilgrim, not a prisoner of this world. Strengthen me to endure temporary suffering with eternal perspective. Fix my eyes on Heaven, where my true home is already prepared. Teach me to walk lightly, obediently, and faithfully until I am with You forever.
In Jesus name, amen.
