That thing towering over you—mocking you, intimidating you, daring you to quit—has been loud for a long time. But today, God says the giant does not get the final word. Today, the giant loses his head.
In recovery, giants show up early and often. Addiction. Fear. Shame. Cravings. Generational strongholds. Voices that tell you it’s too late or you’ll never change. If you don’t learn how God deals with giants, you’ll spend your recovery negotiating with what God already intends to destroy.
“This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you.”
1 Samuel 17:46
Goliath was not defeated by strength, experience, or strategy. He was defeated by faith anchored in who God is.
David did not argue with the giant. He did not analyze the odds. He did not rehearse his past failures. He remembered God.
“The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”
1 Samuel 17:37
Giants fall when you stop magnifying the problem and start magnifying God.
In recovery, the giant often shouts, “You’ve failed before.” But David didn’t fight Goliath based on who he was—he fought based on who God had already proven Himself to be.
Notice something important: the stone knocked Goliath down, but it did not finish him. David had to take the sword and cut off the giant’s head.
That means partial victory is not God’s goal.
If you only knock addiction down but never cut it off, it will rise again. If you silence a craving without severing the root, it will return stronger. God is not calling you to manage your giant—He is calling you to end it.
“Nor give place to the devil.”
Ephesians 4:27
David also refused Saul’s armor. What worked for someone else would not work for him. In recovery, copying another person’s formula without hearing God leads to exhaustion and defeat.
“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7
Your victory will come through obedience, surrender, and trust—not performance.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF FOR SELF-EXAMINATION
-
What giant has been intimidating me the longest in my recovery?
-
In what ways have I been trying to manage the giant instead of destroy it?
-
Where has God already proven His faithfulness that I’ve forgotten?
-
Am I relying on someone else’s armor instead of God’s direction for me?
-
What root issue needs to be cut off, not just knocked down?
-
How do fear and intimidation influence my decisions right now?
-
What would full obedience look like if I truly believed God delivers giants into my hand?

PRAYER
Abba Father, I bring the giant that has been standing in my way. I refuse to magnify fear, addiction, or intimidation any longer. I choose to trust You fully and obey You completely. Give me the courage to cut off what You never intended to coexist with my freedom. I believe the battle belongs to You, and today I walk in victory through Jesus Christ. In Jesus name, amen.
