Relapse only happens when something that should be dead is still alive. If you keep resurrecting the old self, it will eventually drag you back into the grave Jesus already pulled you out of.
Many people relapse not because they lack willpower, but because they never truly died. They stopped using substances, but they didn’t crucify self. As long as the flesh remains active, temptation will always have a landing place. Recovery becomes fragile when self is still breathing. This study is needed because lasting freedom requires death—real death—to the old life.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17
WHY DEAD MEN DON’T RELAPSE
A dead man has no cravings. A dead man has no excuses. A dead man does not respond when temptation knocks. Relapse happens when the old nature is kept on life support instead of being buried.
“How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?”
Romans 6:2
Scripture does not say you are learning to die to sin. It says you died. When you surrendered to Jesus, your old identity was executed.
“Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.”
Romans 6:6
Relapse begins when you start listening to the voice of the flesh again—feelings over truth, comfort over obedience, desire over surrender. The flesh always wants resurrection. But resurrection only belongs to Jesus, not your old self.
“And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
Galatians 5:24
Dead men live differently. They walk by faith, not emotion. They obey even when it hurts. They don’t flirt with sin because they know where it leads.
“For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
Colossians 3:3
If your life is hidden with Christ, then sin has no access to it unless you open the door. Freedom is protected by staying dead to self and alive to God.
“But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
Romans 8:13

PRAYER
Abba Father, I acknowledge that my old life has no authority over me. I choose to stay dead to sin and alive to You. Teach me to recognize the voice of the flesh and to silence it with truth. Strengthen me to walk in the Spirit, to obey without hesitation, and to guard the freedom You have given me. I surrender my will daily so that Jesus alone may live through me, in Jesus name.
