You are in recovery, fighting to rebuild your life from addiction, broken habits, or past wounds. Earthly treasures—money, possessions, status, or even temporary escapes—often fueled your struggles. They promised security but brought emptiness, loss, and destruction. This study redirects your focus to eternal priorities. It helps you detach from material idols that once controlled you, freeing your heart for God’s lasting peace and purpose. In recovery, shifting your “treasure” to heaven builds resilience, reduces cravings for fleeting fixes, and aligns your daily choices with eternal value.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:19-21
Jesus speaks directly to your heart in this passage. He warns against hoarding earthly treasures—wealth, possessions, achievements, or anything you chase for security and identity. These things are fragile. Moths eat fine clothes, rust corrodes metals, and thieves steal what seems safe. No matter how much you accumulate, it can vanish in a moment through loss, market crashes, illness, or death. In your recovery journey, you know this reality well—perhaps substances, relationships, or material pursuits once felt like treasures but ultimately destroyed parts of your life.
Instead, Jesus urges you to invest in heaven’s treasures. These are eternal: acts of faith, generosity, loving others selflessly, serving God, serving others, sharing the gospel, and pursuing righteousness. When you give time, resources, or compassion in Jesus’ name, you store up what lasts forever. Your heart follows your treasure. If your focus stays on earthly gains then anxiety, comparison, and relapse risks grow. But when you prioritize heavenly investments, your desires shift—cravings for temporary highs fade as joy in God deepens.
This teaching ties into the broader context of Matthew 6, where Jesus addresses worry about material needs. He reminds you that God provides like He does for birds and lilies. Seek His kingdom first, and earthly needs fall into place. In recovery, this means trusting God daily instead of grasping for control through old patterns. Your true security isn’t in what you own but in who owns you—Jesus Christ. Choose today to redirect your investments. Your heart will follow, leading to freedom and purpose that no thief can touch.

- What specific actions can I take this week to invest in eternal things, like serving others or growing in faith?
- How does worry about money or stuff distract me from my recovery and relationship with God?
- If my life ended today, what treasures would I leave behind on earth, and what would remain in heaven?

PRAYER Abba Father, I come to You today confessing that I have too often chased treasures on earth that fade and fail. Forgive me for placing my heart in things that moth and rust destroy or thieves steal. Help me to see the emptiness of those pursuits and turn my eyes to heaven. Teach me to invest my time, resources, and love in what lasts eternally—serving You, loving others, and growing in faith. Strengthen me in recovery to trust Your provision instead of grasping for control. Align my heart with Yours so that where my treasure is, there my devotion stays. Thank You for the promise of treasures in heaven that no one can take away. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
