ASSURED OF HEAVEN BY OBEDIENCE

You want assurance. Not a shaky hope. Not wishful thinking. You want to know where you stand with God and where you are going when this life ends. Jesus never left you guessing—He showed you exactly what assurance looks like: following Him in obedience from a surrendered heart.

In recovery, you are learning how to walk differently than you once did. Addiction thrived in rebellion, self-rule, and deception. Freedom grows in surrender, truth, and obedience. When your life begins to align with Jesus’ commands, assurance replaces fear. You stop asking, “Am I really saved?” and start walking in confident peace with God.

“He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

John 14:21

OBEDIENCE CONFIRMS YOUR DESTINY

Obedience does not earn heaven—but it reveals who truly belongs to Jesus. Scripture is clear: following Christ changes how you live.

Jesus said:

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
John 14:15

Love for Jesus is not proven by words, emotions, or religious language. It is proven by obedience. When your life begins to reflect His teachings, you gain assurance—not because you are perfect, but because you are His.

The Apostle John removes all confusion:

“Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.”
1 John 2:3

Notice the wording: by this we know. Obedience produces assurance. When you walk in God’s truth, the Holy Spirit confirms your identity and your eternal future.

Recovery requires putting off the old life and walking in the new:

“And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”
Romans 6:18

This is not bondage—it is freedom. Slavery to righteousness leads to life, peace, and eternal security.

Jesus Himself warned that not everyone who claims Him belongs to Him:

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”
Matthew 7:21

Obedience is not legalism. It is relationship. It is evidence that your heart has truly been changed. When you follow Jesus, your life points forward—to heaven—and your spirit rests in assurance.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF FOR SELF-EXAMINATION

  1. What commandments of Jesus am I currently obeying with joy rather than obligation?

  2. Where has my life changed since I truly began following Christ?

  3. What areas of obedience bring me the greatest sense of peace with God?

  4. Where do I feel resistance to surrender, and what does that reveal about my trust in Jesus?

  5. How does my daily conduct reflect love for Jesus rather than fear of punishment?

  6. What habits has God replaced in my recovery that confirm His work in me?

  7. How does obedience strengthen my confidence about eternity rather than weaken it?

PRAYER

Abba Father,
I come before You with a surrendered heart. I do not want empty religion or false assurance. I want a life that truly follows Jesus. Teach me to obey You from love, not fear. Strengthen me to walk away from sin and toward righteousness. Let my obedience be evidence of my salvation and my assurance of heaven. I trust You with my eternity, my recovery, and my daily walk. I choose to follow Jesus completely, in Jesus name. Amen.
