You were not rescued to blend back in.
You were not delivered to look like everyone else.
You were saved to be set apart.
If you do not understand holiness, you will misunderstand your entire calling in recovery.
WHY IS THIS STUDY NEEDED IN RECOVERY?
Addiction trains you to live common.
Common thinking.
Common compromise.
Common excuses.
But recovery is not about becoming “normal.” It is about becoming holy — set apart.
If you think holiness simply means “being good,” you will either strive in your own strength or quietly surrender to sin when you fail. But holiness is deeper than behavior modification.
Holiness means belonging fully to God — separated from your old life and devoted to Him.
If you do not understand this, you will keep trying to walk forward while still keeping one foot in the past.
“But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’”
1 Peter 1:15–16
First, you must understand how God is holy.
God is holy in His very nature. Holiness means completely pure, morally perfect, undefiled — and entirely set apart from sin.
He is not holy because He tries to be. He is holy because it is who He is.
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”
Isaiah 6:3
The threefold declaration emphasizes His absolute uniqueness. There is no flaw, no darkness, no corruption in Him.
“God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.”
1 John 1:5
He is separate from sin in essence. Sin cannot coexist with Him. His holiness is eternal and unchanging.
Now — how are you holy?
You are not holy by nature. You were born into sin. Addiction revealed how deeply sin affected your desires and choices. But when you surrendered to Jesus, you were set apart.
The word “holy” literally means set apart, consecrated, separated for sacred use.
When you came to Christ, you were positionally set apart for God.
“For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.”
Hebrews 10:14
Through Jesus, you were declared righteous. You were transferred from darkness to light. You now belong to Jesus… Almighty God.
But holiness is not only positional — it is practical.
You must now live set apart.
“For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.”
1 Thessalonians 4:7
To be holy means you no longer live the way you once lived. You separate from environments that fed your addiction. You separate from conversations that stir temptation. You separate from patterns that once enslaved you.
Holiness is separation with devotion.
You are not just separated from sin — you are separated unto God.
“Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”
2 Corinthians 7:1
Holiness protects your recovery. It draws clear lines. It refuses gray areas. It honors the fact that you were bought with a price.
God’s holiness is who He is.
Your holiness is your response to belonging to Him.
You are set apart — not to isolate yourself in pride — but to reflect His purity in a dark world.

PRAYER
Abba Father,
I acknowledge that You are holy — completely pure and set apart from sin. Thank You that through Jesus I have been set apart for You. Forgive me where I have tried to blend in with what You have called me out of. Teach me to live distinctly, devoted fully to You. Cleanse my habits, my thoughts, and my desires. Give me courage to separate from anything that pulls me backward. Help me reflect Your holiness in my recovery and in my daily conduct. I belong to You. Shape me to live like it. In Jesus name.
