WHAT MUSIC BELONGS IN YOUR EARS?

One of the biggest bumps in your road to freedom can very well be the music you listen to.

You may not think it matters. You may tell yourself, “It’s just a song.” But music is never neutral. It carries atmosphere. It carries memory. It carries spirit. It carries a teaching about life.

In addiction, music often becomes a trigger — tied to old habits, old emotions, old identities. The same beat that once felt powerful can quietly pull you back into cravings, anger, lust, rebellion, or despair.

And here is the truth you must accept:

The music of the world is tainted. It glorifies self. It glorifies rebellion. It glorifies lust, pride, money, anger, revenge, and sensuality.

Even when it sounds beautiful, its root is all to often corrupt.

You cannot fill your ears with the world all week and expect spiritual strength when temptation comes.

Believers were never meant to consume the soundtrack of Babylon.

Your ears belong to God.

Music must stir the Holy Spirit in you.

It is not about performance.
It is not about hype.
It is not about emotional manipulation.

True worship is a one-on-one experience between you and Yahweh — pure joy, deep peace, and sacred connection.

If your music feeds your flesh, your flesh will grow.
If your music feeds your spirit, your spirit will rise.

You must choose what you will magnify.

“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,”

Ephesians 5:18–1

Notice the contrast.

Drunk with wine… or filled with the Spirit.

One numbs.
The other awakens.

And how are you filled?

Through psalms.
Through hymns.
Through spiritual songs.
Through melody in your heart to the Lord.

Not worldly anthems.
Not flesh-driven beats.
Not self-exalting lyrics.

Spirit-filled believers should sound different.

Addiction trained you to chase feelings.

The world’s music trains you to exalt self.

Worship trains you to surrender.

The music of the world is tainted because it flows from a system that opposes God.

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
1 John 2:15

That includes its entertainment.

This does not mean every melody is evil — but the system behind it is broken. Its values are corrupted. Its messages are subtle but powerful.

You must guard your gates.

“I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me.”
Psalm 101:3

What clings to your ears will cling to your heart.

And hear this clearly:

Not all modern “worship” music is safe either.

Much of it feeds emotion more than holiness. Some of it centers experience instead of Christ. Some of it stirs fleshly excitement instead of reverent surrender.

You must discern everything.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God…”
1 John 4:1

Ask:

Does this song exalt Jesus?
Does it align with Scripture?
Does it produce humility and obedience?
Does it make me want holiness?

If not, it does not belong in your ears.

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
John 4:24

Spirit and truth.

Truth means biblically sound.
Spirit means Holy Spirit-led — not emotionally manipulated.

In recovery, you cannot afford compromise.

The wrong soundtrack can awaken the wrong desires.

The right worship can silence cravings and remind you who you are — a child of God, not a slave to sin.

7 QUESTIONS FOR SELF-EXAMINATION

What percentage of the music I listen to truly glorifies God?

  1. Are there worldly songs that still emotionally tie me to my past life?

  2. Do I defend certain music because I enjoy it, even if it is spiritually questionable?

  3. When temptation rises, does my playlist strengthen my flesh or my spirit?

  4. Have I assumed modern worship is automatically safe without testing it?

  5. Does my music consistently point me toward surrender and obedience?

  6. What would change in my recovery if worship became the only soundtrack of my life?

PRAYER

Abba Father,

Consecrate my ears to You. I do not want to consume what dishonors You or awakens the flesh I am crucifying. Give me discernment to recognize what is tainted and what is pure.

Help me release worldly soundtracks that tie me to my past. Teach me to love worship that magnifies Jesus and produces holiness in me. Guard my heart from emotional hype and fleshly stimulation disguised as spiritual depth.

Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Let my life have a new sound — one of surrender, reverence, and joy in Your presence.

Be my strength and my song.

In Jesus name,

Amen.
