In recovery, you will face temptation. That is not a possibility — it is a certainty.
But here is where many fall: when the pressure rises, you begin to wonder…
“Why is God allowing this?”
“Why would God put this desire in me?”
“Is He testing me by dangling sin in front of me?”
If you misunderstand where temptation comes from, you will either blame God or excuse your flesh. Both will keep you bound.
You must settle this in your spirit: God is not your tempter.
If you are going to recover once and be free for life, you must understand the real source of temptation — and how to stop it before it becomes sin.
“Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.”
James 1:13–14
TEMPTATION DOES NOT COME FROM GOD
God cannot be tempted by evil. There is nothing in Him that responds to darkness.
And because He is holy, He does not tempt you with evil either.
Temptation does not come from Heaven. It does not come from the Holy Spirit. It does not come as a “lesson” wrapped in sin.
Temptation begins inside you.
James says you are “drawn away.” That phrase paints a picture of being pulled off course — like a fish lured from safe waters toward a hidden hook.
Then he says you are “enticed.” That means baited. The desire is dangled in front of your flesh until you bite.
This is critical in recovery:
Your addiction did not begin because God tempted you. It began because uncrucified desire met opportunity.
YOUR FLESH IS THE ENTRY POINT
Your past may explain your wounds.
Your trauma may explain your vulnerabilities.
But your desires are still your responsibility.
Temptation hooks into:
-
Unhealed pain
-
Pride
-
Lust
-
Anger
-
Self-pity
-
Entitlement
The enemy does not create desire. He exploits it.
But here is the hope: if temptation starts in misplaced desire, then victory starts in transformed desire.
When Jesus changes what you love, temptation loses its power.
HOW TEMPTATION BECOMES SIN
Temptation is not sin.
Feeling the pull is not failure.
Being enticed is not the same as falling.
Sin happens when you agree with temptation.
Sin happens when you entertain it, justify it, and act on it.
Jesus was tempted — yet without sin.
“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
Hebrews 4:15
Temptation knocks.
Sin opens the door.

PRAYER
Abba Father,
I confess that I have sometimes blamed You for temptations that came from my own desires. Forgive me. You are holy, and You do not tempt me with evil.
Search my heart. Expose the desires in me that are not aligned with You. Do not let me be drawn away and enticed. Strengthen me to abort temptation before it becomes sin.
Transform what I love. Change my cravings. Purify my motives. Help me walk in vigilance and surrender so that I do not give birth to sin again.
Thank You for always providing a way of escape. I choose that way today.
In Jesus name, amen.
