TRYING TO CONTROL EVERYTHING IS EXHAUSTING BECAUSE IT IS NOT BIBLICAL

When you come out of addiction, you often swing from chaos to control.

You tell yourself:
“I will never let things spiral again.”
“I will stay on top of everything.”
“I will manage every detail.”

But if you are honest, constantly exercising dominance and control leaves you drained.

Why?

Because you were never designed to carry that weight.

Addiction is rooted in self-rule — doing life your way. Recovery is rooted in surrender — doing life God’s way. If you bring a controlling spirit into recovery, you will sabotage your own peace.

You cannot dominate your way into freedom.

“But Jesus called them to Himself and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.’”

Matthew 20:25–26 NKJV

Jesus directly rejected domination as a Kingdom model.

“It shall not be so among you.”

That includes you.

CONTROL IS ROOTED IN FEAR, NOT FAITH

When you try to dominate, something inside you feels threatened.

You fear:

  • Losing influence

  • Being disrespected

  • Being hurt again

  • Things falling apart

But Scripture says:

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment.”
1 John 4:18 NKJV

Control torments you because it is powered by fear.

Faith rests.
Fear grasps.

DOMINANCE IS A FLESH RESPONSE

“For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.”
James 3:16 NKJV

Self-seeking leadership produces confusion. It creates tension in marriages, families, churches, and recovery communities.

In addiction, you tried to manage your pain.
In control mode, you try to manage people.

Neither produces peace.

JESUS MODELED HUMILITY, NOT DOMINATION

“Who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant…”
Philippians 2:6–7 NKJV

Jesus had all authority — yet chose humility.

You do not have to shrink to be humble.
But you do have to surrender.

True authority flows from obedience to God, not intimidation of others.

YOU ARE EXHAUSTED BECAUSE YOU ARE TRYING TO BE GOD

This is the hard truth.

When you attempt to control:

  • Outcomes

  • People’s reactions

  • Other people’s growth

  • Timing

  • The future

You are stepping into God’s seat.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5–6 NKJV

Your role is obedience.
God’s role is outcomes.

When you confuse the two, you burn out.

HUMILITY BRINGS REST

“Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:6–7

Humility is not weakness.
It is accurate positioning.

You control your obedience.
You surrender everything else.

That posture brings rest.

SAY THIS PRAYER IF YOU MEANT IT

Abba Father,

I confess that I have tried to control what was never mine to control. I have attempted to dominate situations and people because I was afraid. Forgive me for stepping into a place that belongs to You alone.

Teach me humility. Help me trust You with outcomes. Show me how to rule my own spirit instead of trying to rule others. Remove fear from my heart and replace it with peace. I surrender control to You today.

Strengthen me to walk in obedience and leave the results in Your hands.

In Jesus holy name, amen.
