You look back and see damage.
Years gone.
Relationships broken.
Health weakened.
Opportunities missed.
Time you cannot get back.
Addiction convinces you that what’s lost is lost forever. Shame whispers, “You wasted your life.” Regret screams, “Too late.”
But God says something radically different.
In recovery, you must learn this truth: God is not limited by your past. He is a Restorer.
If you don’t settle this in your heart, you will live free from substances but still chained to regret.
“So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten,
The crawling locust,
The consuming locust,
And the chewing locust,
My great army which I sent among you.”
— Joel 2:25 NKJV
WHAT DOES “RESTORE THE YEARS” REALLY MEAN?
The prophet Book of Joel spoke to people who had experienced devastation. Locusts had stripped everything. Crops were gone. Livelihood destroyed.
It looked irreversible.
But God did not promise to rewind time.
He promised restoration.
In recovery, “locust years” may look like:

Years lost to addiction

Years absent from your children
-
Years of spiritual rebellion

Years of financial ruin
-
Years of damaged reputation
You cannot relive those years.
But God can:

Accelerate growth
-
Rebuild what was destroyed
-
Bring deeper wisdom through suffering
-
Redeem pain for purpose
-
Restore relationships that looked dead
He does not just patch your life.
He multiplies what remains.
RESTORATION IS NOT AUTOMATIC
Notice something powerful.
In the verses before Joel 2:25, God calls His people to repentance.
“Now, therefore,” says the Lord,
“Turn to Me with all your heart,
With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”
— Joel 2:12 NKJV
Restoration follows surrender.
You cannot cling to addiction and expect restoration.
You cannot hold onto pride and expect renewal.
You cannot keep one foot in sin and one foot in freedom.
You must turn fully.
And when you do — restoration begins.
HOW GOD RESTORES IN RECOVERY
1. HE RESTORES YOUR IDENTITY
Addiction named you.
Failure labeled you.
But God says:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
You are not your past.
You are redeemed.
2. HE RESTORES YOUR PURPOSE
The enemy steals destiny. God resurrects it.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
— Romans 8:28 NKJV
Even addiction.
Even relapse.
Even devastation.
He weaves it into purpose when you surrender.
3. HE RESTORES YOUR YEARS THROUGH FRUITFULNESS
Sometimes restoration looks like acceleration.
You may walk with more wisdom at 40 than you would have at 60 without suffering.
You may minister to others with authority because you have scars.
You may impact more lives in ten sober years than you did in twenty lost ones.
God does not waste pain.
WHAT RESTORATION IS NOT

It is not pretending the damage didn’t happen.

It is not instant trust from others.
-
It is not skipping consequences.
Sometimes you will still face earthly results of past choices.
But even there — God restores internally what was externally lost.
Peace.
Joy.
Dignity.
Clarity.
Authority in Christ.

PRAYER
Abba Father,
You see the years I lost. You see the damage, the regret, the shame, and the grief over what could have been. I bring all of it to You right now.
I turn to You with my whole heart. I lay down pride, excuses, and hidden sin. Restore what was eaten. Restore what was broken. Restore what I cannot fix on my own.
Give me courage to believe that You are not finished with me. Redeem my past. Use my scars. Multiply what remains. Make my life fruitful for Your glory.
I trust You to restore the years the locusts have taken.
