You will face scoffers.
When you walk away from addiction and toward Jesus, not everyone will clap. Some will mock. Some will minimize your transformation. Some will say, “You’ll be back.” Others will laugh at your surrender.
In early recovery, scoffers are dangerous because they attack belief. And if they can weaken your faith, they can weaken your foundation.
You must know how to recognize them — and how to stand firm.
“Knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts.”
2 Peter 3:3 NKJV
Scoffers don’t just mock randomly. They mock because they are defending their own sin. When someone is “walking according to their own lusts,” your obedience exposes their rebellion.
Your recovery convicts their compromise.
WHAT IS A SCOFFER?
A scoffer is not simply someone who disagrees with you.
A scoffer is someone who:
-
Mocks what is holy
-
Belittles obedience
-
Ridicules repentance
-
Treats God’s truth as foolishness
“A proud and haughty man—‘Scoffer’ is his name; He acts with arrogant pride.”
Proverbs 21:24 NKJV
Scoffing is rooted in pride.
When you surrendered to Jesus, you humbled yourself. Scoffers refuse to humble themselves — so they mock those who do.
HOW SCOFFERS AFFECT RECOVERY
In early recovery especially, your faith is tender.
Scoffers will say:
-
“You’re being extreme.”
-
“You don’t need all that Jesus stuff.”
-
“Addiction is just a disease.”
-
“You’re brainwashed.”
-
“You’ll relapse.”
If you listen long enough, doubt creeps in.
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly… Nor sits in the seat of the scornful.”
Psalm 1:1 NKJV
Notice the progression. Walk. Stand. Sit.
If you keep company with scoffers, you eventually sit with them. And what you sit under, you slowly become.
HOW YOU MUST RESPOND
You are not called to argue with scoffers.
You are called to separate from them.
“Cast out the scoffer, and contention will leave; Yes, strife and reproach will cease.”
Proverbs 22:10 NKJV
Sometimes peace in recovery requires distance.
You cannot heal in an atmosphere of ridicule.
You cannot grow while constantly defending your surrender.
You cannot stay free if you crave approval from people who mock obedience.
THE TRUTH ABOUT SCOFFERS
Scoffers are not strong.
They are cowardly and feel threatened.
When you recover once and walk free for life through total surrender to Jesus Christ, you expose the lie that bondage is permanent.
Your freedom is proof.
And proof irritates pride.
“He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself… Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you.”
Proverbs 9:7–8 NKJV
You do not need their validation.
You need God’s approval.

PRAYER
Abba Father,
Strengthen my heart against every scoffing voice. Guard my mind from doubt planted by prideful words. Help me not to fear man, but to fear You. Give me boldness to stand firm in my recovery and humility to remain surrendered.
If I must walk alone for a season, remind me that I am never alone with You. Protect the freedom You have given me. Establish me so deeply in truth that no mockery can shake me.
I choose obedience over approval. I choose surrender over pride. I choose Jesus over every scoffing voice.
In Jesus holy name, amen.
