I wrote this article today because too many believers don’t understand what victory is when you’re following Jesus. I hope this helps you! Much love, Dina
In addiction, you defined victory one way.
Victory meant:
-
Getting away with it.
-
Feeling good.
-
Proving people wrong.
-
Having control.
-
Winning arguments.
-
Looking strong.
-
Avoiding consequences.
But Jesus defines victory differently.
And if you don’t let Him redefine it, you will chase a worldly version of success that still leaves you spiritually defeated.
In recovery, this matters deeply.
Because you can:
-
Stay sober and still be prideful.
-
Serve in ministry and still crave applause.
-
Quit the substance but keep the ego.
-
Look clean but stay unhealed.
You don’t need worldly victory.
You need Jesus’ version.
“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
Romans 8:37 NKJV
Notice what it says.
Not conquerors through willpower.
Not conquerors through image management.
Not conquerors through self-improvement.
Through Him.
Victory in the eyes of Jesus is not about domination.
It’s about transformation.
WHAT DOES VICTORY LOOK LIKE TO JESUS?
1. VICTORY LOOKS LIKE HUMILITY
The world says: Assert yourself.
Jesus says: Die to yourself.
“And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:27–28 NKJV
In recovery, victory is when you:
-
Repent!
-
Admit you were wrong.
-
Stop defending your flesh.
-
Choose peace over being right.
- Make any amends that need to be made.
That’s strength in Heaven.
2. VICTORY LOOKS LIKE OBEDIENCE
You used to obey cravings.
Now you obey Christ.
Even when it’s inconvenient.
Even when no one sees.
Even when it costs you.
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
John 14:15 NKJV
Victory is not a feeling.
It is daily submission to Jesus and obedience.
3. VICTORY LOOKS LIKE SELF-CONTROL
The world celebrates indulgence.
Jesus celebrates restraint.
“He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.”
Proverbs 16:32 NKJV
Did you see that?
Ruling your spirit is greater than conquering a city.
In recovery, when you:
-
Walk away instead of react,
-
Pray instead of explode,
-
Close the tab instead of indulge,
-
Go to bed instead of relapse,
Heaven calls that victory.
4. VICTORY LOOKS LIKE ENDURANCE
Anyone can start strong.
Victory is finishing faithful.
“But he who endures to the end shall be saved.”
Matthew 24:13 NKJV
Victory is:
-
Choosing Jesus on day 3.
-
Choosing Jesus on day 300.
-
Choosing Jesus when it’s boring.
-
Choosing Jesus when it’s painful.
Consistency is spiritual warfare.
5. VICTORY LOOKS LIKE LOVE
This one changes everything.
You can be sober and still harsh.
You can be right and still unloving.
But Jesus measures differently.
“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
John 13:35 NKJV
Victory is when:
-
You forgive.
- No roots of bitterness.
-
You pray for those who hurt you.
-
You stop rehearsing offenses.
-
You become safe for others.
Love is the evidence.
6. VICTORY LOOKS LIKE SURRENDER
This is the one your flesh hates.
You want control.
Jesus wants surrender.
“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”
Matthew 16:25 NKJV
In recovery, victory is not white-knuckling life.
It’s daily surrender.
Recover once.
Be free for life.
Only through total surrender to Jesus Christ.
That’s real victory.
7 QUESTIONS FOR SELF-EXAMINATION
-
Where am I still chasing worldly validation instead of Christlike transformation?
-
In what situations do I prioritize being right over being humble?
-
What area of obedience have I been delaying because it feels uncomfortable?
-
How do I respond when no one notices my effort or growth?
-
Where do I still react emotionally instead of ruling my spirit?
-
Who do I need to forgive in order to reflect Christ’s victory?
-
What would daily surrender look like practically in my current season of recovery?
Sit with these.
Let the Holy Spirit answer honestly.

PRAYER
Abba Father,
Redefine victory in my heart. Strip away every worldly mindset that still clings to pride, control, and self-exaltation. Teach me that true victory is humility, obedience, love, endurance, and surrender to Jesus Christ.
Help me rule my spirit instead of being ruled by my emotions. Help me forgive quickly. Help me obey quietly. Help me endure faithfully.
I do not want surface success. I want Heaven’s approval. I want to be more than a conqueror through Him who loved me.
Let my recovery reflect Your victory, not my ego.
I surrender again today.
In Jesus holy name, amen.
