YOU ARE NOT A TAG OR A LABEL

The world of recovery has become saturated with labels, diagnoses, and lifelong identities that keep people bound. You’ve been told you’re an “addict,” that you have a “disease,” that you’ll always be “in recovery.” These labels have become tags that define your entire existence. But what if these tags aren’t from God? What if they’re actually keeping you from the freedom Christ died to give you? This study is needed because it’s time to strip away the false identity the world has placed on you and discover who you truly are in Christ. The church has largely adopted the world’s view of addiction, forgetting that God’s Word has already provided everything we need for life and godliness. It’s time to return to the biblical foundation of freedom and identity in Christ alone.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17
You were not created to be defined by your struggles. When God formed you in your mother’s womb, He didn’t design you with a label attached. He created you in His image, with purpose and destiny. Yet somewhere along the way, you’ve allowed the world to stick tags on you that have shaped how you see yourself. These tags might read “addict,” “alcoholic,” “codependent,” or a dozen other labels the recovery world uses. But these tags are not from God.
“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.”
Deuteronomy 7:6
God calls you holy, chosen, and His special treasure. That’s your true identity. The tags of the world are counterfeit identities that steal the reality of who you are in Christ. When you accept these tags as your identity, you’re agreeing with the enemy’s assessment of you rather than God’s.
The world tells you that once an addict, always an addict. But God’s Word tells you that you’re a new creation in Christ. These two statements cannot both be true. You must choose which one you’ll believe. The tags of the world speak to what you once were, but the truth of God’s Word speaks to who you are now in Christ.
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8
Notice that Christ died for you while you were still a sinner. He didn’t wait for you to get cleaned up first. And when you received Christ, something supernatural happened—you were transformed from the inside out. You didn’t just get forgiven for your sin; you were made righteous in Christ. You didn’t just get help for your problem; you became a new creation.
“And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”
1 Corinthians 6:11
The phrase “such were some of you” speaks to your past identity. The phrase “But you were…” speaks to your present reality in Christ. You were once defined by your sinful behaviors, but now you’re defined by what Christ has done for you. The tags of the world keep you focused on what you were, but the truth of God’s Word calls you to focus on who you are now in Christ.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’”
Romans 8:14-15
You have not been given a spirit of bondage that keeps you enslaved to old labels and identities. You’ve received the Spirit of adoption, making you a son or daughter of God. This is your new identity. This is your true identity. The tags of the world are counterfeit identities that the enemy uses to keep you in bondage, but Christ has set you free from all of that.
“Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.”
2 Timothy 1:8-9
God has saved you and called you with a holy calling—not according to your past or your performance, but according to His purpose and grace. You are not defined by your struggles; you’re defined by God’s calling upon your life. The tags of the world try to reduce you to your lowest moments, but God’s Word elevates you to His highest purposes.
It’s time to remove the tags that the world has placed on you. It’s time to stop identifying yourself by your past struggles and start identifying yourself by who Christ says you are. You are not an addict. You are not an alcoholic. You are not defined by your former behaviors. You are a new creation in Christ, holy and beloved, called with a holy calling according to His purpose and grace.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF FOR SELF-EXAMINATION

1. What specific tags or labels have you accepted as part of your identity?
2. How have these tags influenced how you see yourself and your potential?
3. In what ways might you be holding onto these labels more tightly than your identity in Christ?
4. What would change in your life if you fully embraced your identity as a new creation in Christ?
5. How does it feel to consider that God sees you as holy and chosen rather than defined by your struggles?
6. What practical steps can you take to remove these false tags and embrace your true identity in Christ?
7. How might your relationships and daily decisions be different if you viewed yourself through God’s eyes rather than through the lens of worldly labels?

PRAYER

Abba Father, I thank You that I am not defined by the tags and labels of this world. I thank You that in Christ, I am a new creation. Forgive me for accepting false identities that have kept me in bondage. Help me to see myself as You see me—holy, chosen, and dearly loved. I renounce every label that contradicts Your Word, and I embrace my true identity in Christ. Transform my mind and renew my thinking according to Your truth. Empower me to live as the new creation You have made me to be, free from the bondage of past labels and walking in the freedom of my new identity in Christ. I choose to believe Your truth about me rather than the world’s lies. Thank You for the freedom that is mine in Jesus. In Jesus’ holy name, Amen.
