If you’re trying to walk with Jesus by watching how other people live instead of searching your Bible for yourself, you are setting yourself up for confusion, deception, and spiritual weakness. In recovery and in your walk with Christ, your foundation must be the Word of God—not personalities, opinions, or appearances.
WHY IS THIS STUDY NEEDED IN RECOVERY
In recovery, you are rebuilding your life from the ground up. That means everything must be rooted in truth—not what “looks right,” not what others say is okay, and not what feels comfortable.
When you follow people instead of Scripture:
- You inherit their blind spots
- You adopt their compromises
- You miss God’s direct instruction for YOUR life
People can be wrong. Even well-meaning Christians can drift, justify sin, or live inconsistently. But God’s Word never changes.
If you build your recovery on people, you will fall when they fall.
If you build your recovery on the Word of God, you will stand—no matter what anyone else does.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV
PEOPLE ARE NOT YOUR STANDARD—JESUS IS
You are not called to imitate flawed human behavior—you are called to follow Jesus.
“He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” 1 John 2:6 NKJV
Notice what this says: walk as He walked—not as your friend walks, not as your pastor walks, not as someone online walks.
Jesus is your standard.
EVEN STRONG BELIEVERS CAN LEAD YOU WRONG
The Bible gives us clear warning: even spiritual leaders can make mistakes.
“Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1 NKJV
Paul made it clear—only follow someone to the extent that they are following Christ.
The moment someone’s actions don’t line up with Scripture, you do NOT follow them—you go back to the Word.
YOUR BIBLE IS YOUR PROTECTION
When you search the Scriptures for yourself, you become anchored. You stop being easily influenced or swayed.
“These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.” Acts 17:11 NKJV
They didn’t blindly accept what they were told—they checked it against God’s Word.
That is your responsibility too.
If this is exposing something in you, I want you to go deeper:
- Read: DO YOU NEED PEOPLE VALIDATION? (this will help you break dependence on approval)
- Read: HOW DOES FEAR OF RELAPSE UNDERMINE YOUR RECOVERY? (this will show you how fear can push you toward people instead of God)
These will strengthen your foundation so you rely on Jesus—not people.

PRAYER
Abba Father,
I come before You in humility, recognizing that I have sometimes looked to people instead of Your Word for direction. Forgive me for following examples that were not rooted in You.
Lord, teach me to seek You first in everything. Give me a hunger for Your Word and the discipline to search the Scriptures daily. Help me to discern truth from error and to stand firm on what You say—no matter what others do.
Strengthen my walk so that I follow Jesus alone, not the patterns of people. Lead me, guide me, and correct me when I drift. I surrender my understanding, my habits, and my influences to You.
I choose today to build my life on Your truth.
In Jesus holy Almighty name, amen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why shouldn’t I follow other Christians as examples?
Because no person is perfect. Even strong believers can make mistakes. Your standard must always be Jesus and the Word of God.
Is it wrong to learn from others in recovery?
No—but everything you learn must be tested against Scripture. People can guide you, but they should never replace God’s Word.
How do I start searching the Bible for myself?
Start daily. Read slowly. Ask God for understanding. Look at what the Scripture actually says—not what you’ve heard others say about it.
What happens if I realize I’ve been following wrong examples?
You correct course immediately. Go back to the Word, align your life with it, and keep moving forward.
