If you find yourself saying, “God understands,” while continuing in something you know is wrong… you are not walking in grace—you are misusing it. Grace was never given as permission to continue in sin. It was given as power to come out of it.
WHY IS THIS STUDY NEEDED IN RECOVERY?
One of the most dangerous lies in recovery is this:
“I’m under grace, so God will forgive me.”
That mindset keeps people stuck.
They fall…
they justify…
they repeat…
And they call it “grace.”
But that is not grace. That is bondage disguised as comfort.
If you misunderstand grace, you will stay in cycles that Jesus died to break.
“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not!”
Romans 6:1–2 NKJV
WHAT GRACE ACTUALLY IS
Grace is not a license to sin.
Grace is the power to overcome it.
“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.”
Titus 2:11–12 NKJV
Grace doesn’t excuse sin—it teaches you to walk away from it.
GRACE CONVICTS—IT DOESN’T COMFORT SIN
If what you are calling “grace” makes you feel comfortable continuing in sin, it is not from God.
The real grace of God will:
- convict you
- correct you
- draw you out
- lead you higher
“For whom the Lord loves He chastens…”
Hebrews 12:6 NKJV
Love doesn’t leave you where you’re destroying yourself.
GRACE DOESN’T LOWER THE STANDARD
Some people think grace means God lowered His expectations.
He didn’t.
He raised you up to meet them through Jesus.
“Be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:16 NKJV
Grace empowers you to live differently—not excuse you to stay the same.
USING GRACE WRONG HARDENS YOUR HEART
Every time you justify sin, you weaken your sensitivity to conviction.
Over time, that leads to:
- spiritual numbness
- compromised thinking
- deeper entanglement
“But exhort one another daily… lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”
Hebrews 3:13 NKJV
Sin is deceitful—and misused grace helps hide that deception.
TRUE GRACE PRODUCES CHANGE
If grace is real in your life, it will show.
Not in perfection—but in direction.
“Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance.”
Matthew 3:8 NKJV
Grace produces movement away from sin—not comfort in it.
THE HARD TRUTH
If you are knowingly continuing in sin while saying, “God understands,”… you are not standing in grace. You are standing in rebellion—while using grace as a cover. And that is dangerous.
“Do not be deceived…”
Galatians 6:7 NKJV
WHAT FREEDOM LOOKS LIKE HERE
Freedom looks like:
- responding to conviction quickly
- not excusing what you know is wrong
- turning immediately instead of delaying
- valuing obedience over comfort
Grace becomes your strength—not your excuse.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
2 Corinthians 12:9 NKJV

PRAYER
Abba Father,
I come before You humbled, recognizing that I have at times misused Your grace. I see now where I have justified what I should have surrendered. I ask You to forgive me for treating Your mercy as permission instead of power.
Create in me a heart that responds quickly to conviction. Make me sensitive again to Your voice. Give me the strength to walk away from anything that is not pleasing to You.
I choose obedience today. I choose truth over comfort. I choose to walk in the kind of grace that transforms me—not the kind I have used to excuse myself.
Change me from the inside out. I surrender fully again.
In Jesus holy name, Amen.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Does grace mean God overlooks sin?
Absolutely not! Grace provides forgiveness and power to change, but it does not ignore or approve sin… especially ongoing same sins.
Can you misuse grace?
Yes. When you use grace as an excuse to continue sinning, you are misusing it and threatening your eternity with Jesus.
Why is this dangerous in recovery?
Because it keeps you in cycles of relapse and prevents true transformation.
What does real grace do?
It teaches, convicts, strengthens, and leads you out of sin into a new way of living.
