THE FIRST SIGNS YOU’RE SLIPPING SPIRITUALLY

Spiritual decline rarely happens overnight. It begins quietly—subtly—almost unnoticed. You don’t wake up one day far from God… you drift there one small compromise at a time.

And if you don’t recognize the early signs, you won’t stop the fall.

RecoveryRoom7.org is here for those who are ready for Christ-centered recovery, real discipleship, and freedom that does not keep recycling the same chains.

WHY IS THIS STUDY NEEDED IN RECOVERY?

In recovery, you cannot afford to drift.  Spiritual slipping leads to:

  • mental compromise
  • emotional instability
  • weakened conviction
  • eventual relapse

But most people don’t recognize it early enough. They think:

  • “I’m just tired”
  • “I’ll get back on track tomorrow”
  • “This isn’t a big deal”

And slowly… distance grows. Recovery isn’t just about what you stop doing. It’s about staying close to God.

“Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.”

Hebrews 2:1 NKJV

THE FIRST SIGNS YOU’RE SLIPPING

Spiritual slipping is subtle—but it leaves clues.

1) YOU STOP PRIORITIZING TIME WITH GOD

You don’t necessarily stop completely.

You just:

  • shorten it
  • rush it
  • skip it more often

And over time, it becomes optional.

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you…”
James 4:8 NKJV

Distance from God doesn’t happen all at once—it happens through neglect.

2) CONVICTION FEELS WEAKER

Things that once bothered you… don’t hit the same anymore.

You begin to:

  • justify
  • overlook
  • tolerate

What you once resisted.

“Do not quench the Spirit.”
1 Thessalonians 5:19 NKJV

Conviction is a gift. Losing sensitivity to it is a warning.

3) YOU START ENTERTAINING WHAT YOU USED TO AVOID

You don’t jump back into sin fully.

You just:

  • “watch a little”
  • “listen to a little”
  • “engage just slightly”

But what you entertain… grows.

“Abstain from every form of evil.”
1 Thessalonians 5:22 NKJV

Small compromises are never small in recovery.

4) YOU BECOME MORE DISTRACTED

Your focus shifts.

Your mind is constantly:

  • scrolling
  • thinking about other things
  • avoiding stillness

And you struggle to stay present with God.

“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”
Colossians 3:2 NKJV

Distraction is often the first doorway to drifting.

5) YOU START JUSTIFYING INSTEAD OF SURRENDERING

Instead of saying, “This needs to change,”…

you begin explaining why it’s okay.

This is where deception sets in.

“He who covers his sins will not prosper…”
Proverbs 28:13 NKJV

Justification keeps you stuck. Surrender sets you free.

THE HARD TRUTH

You don’t fall suddenly. You drift slowly. By the time it feels serious—you’re already far from where you once were.

Here’s the truth: You can stop it early.

This is exactly why Breakthrough in 7 exists—it’s a free introduction to our one-on-one coaching with me, where I help you identify these patterns early and walk you back into alignment with God before deeper damage is done. You must engage daily to continue.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU NOTICE THESE SIGNS

  • Don’t ignore it.
  • Don’t delay.
  • Don’t minimize it.
  • Return immediately.

“Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord…
Malachi 3:7 NKJV

That means:

  • be honest
  • repent quickly
  • remove what is pulling you away
  • reestablish your time with God

The faster you respond—the less ground you lose.

WHAT STAYING STRONG LOOKS LIKE

Staying strong looks like:

  • guarding your time with God
  • responding quickly to conviction
  • refusing small compromises
  • staying aware of your spiritual condition

It’s not about perfection. It’s about staying close to Him.

“Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”
Matthew 26:41 NKJV

PRAYER

Abba Father,

I come before You with honesty. Show me where I have begun to drift. Reveal any place in my life where I have allowed distance, distraction, or compromise to take root.

I don’t want to ignore the warning signs. I don’t want to delay returning to You. Strengthen me to respond quickly, to repent fully, and to realign my life with You.

Draw me back into closeness with You. Restore what has weakened. Sharpen my awareness and keep my heart sensitive to Your Spirit.

I choose to come back fully—right now.

In Jesus holy name, Amen.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I know if I’m slipping spiritually?
Look for changes in your time with God, sensitivity to conviction, and tolerance for compromise.

Is spiritual slipping the same as relapse?
It often comes before relapse—it’s the early warning stage.

Can I recover quickly if I catch it early?
Yes. Immediate repentance and realignment can stop deeper decline.

Why is this so important in recovery?
Because spiritual drift leads to vulnerability, and vulnerability leads back into bondage.
