So many of you are so broken by the apostasy that exists in the ‘church’ today. My heart is broken too.
What you see in many churches today is not what Jesus established. Somewhere along the way, what began as a Spirit-filled, sacrificial, truth-driven body became something else—something organized, polished, and often self-serving, and lacking the power of His Holy Spirit as He intended Him to be.
WHY IS THIS STUDY NEEDED IN RECOVERY?
Many people in recovery have been hurt, confused, or disillusioned by church experiences. Some have walked away. Some stay but feel empty. Some believe something is off—but can’t explain it. You are not wrong to sense the difference.
The early Church was alive. Today, much of what is called “church” feels lifeless.
Understanding this matters, because:
- your healing depends on truth
- your growth depends on alignment
- your freedom depends on real discipleship
“And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
Acts 2:42
WHAT THE CHURCH WAS SUPPOSED TO BE
In Acts of the Apostles chapters 2, 3, and 4, the Church was not a building or a weekly event.
It was a living body.
“Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.”
Acts 2:44–45
This was:
- sacrificial
- relational
- Spirit-led
- truth-centered
- bold
- unified
“Nor was there anyone among them who lacked…”
Acts 4:34
Needs were met.
Lives were changed.
Jesus was the center.
WHAT HAPPENED OVER TIME
The drift did not happen overnight. It happened slowly. As the Church grew, people began to:
- institutionalize what was meant to be relational
- organize what was meant to be Spirit-led
- control what was meant to be surrendered
Warnings were already given:
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires… they will turn their ears away from the truth.”
2 Timothy 4:3–4
“But there were also false prophets among the people… who will secretly bring in destructive heresies…”
2 Peter 2:1
This is not new. It was foretold.
You don’t have to navigate truth and deception alone — RecoveryRoom7.org offers one-on-one, Christ-centered recovery support for those ready to fully surrender to Jesus.
WHEN CHURCH BECOMES SELF-SERVING
When the focus shifts away from Jesus, everything changes.
Instead of:
- serving one another
- bearing burdens
- living sacrificially
It becomes:
- performance
- appearance
- programs
- self-promotion
“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit…”
Philippians 2:3
But much of what is seen today is built on exactly that. This is why people feel:
- unseen
- unsupported
- disconnected
Because the structure may be present… but GOD’s Spirit is missing.
THIS IS NOT A CALL TO ABANDON THE CHURCH
This is a call to return to what it was meant to be. The true Church is still alive. It’s just not alive in any buildling.
It is:
- people surrendered to Jesus
- people walking in truth
- people serving one another
- people led by the Holy Spirit
“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”
Matthew 18:20
The Church is not a building. It is a body.
YOU ARE CALLED TO LIVE THIS WAY
You are not called to sit, consume, and observe. You are called to:
- love as GOD loves
- serve
- give
- disciple
- walk in truth
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
Galatians 6:2
If you are waiting for a perfect church to do this… you will wait forever. It starts with you.

SELF-EXAMINATION QUESTIONS
- What has my personal experience with church shaped me to believe about God?
- Where have I become passive instead of actively living as part of the Body?
- How do I respond when I see something that doesn’t align with Scripture?
- What role am I currently playing in serving others?
- Where have I allowed disappointment to distance me from truth?
- What would it look like for me to live like the early Church today?
- How is God calling me to be part of the solution rather than just observing the problem?

PRAYER
Abba Father,
I come before You in the holy name of Jesus. I ask You to open my eyes to truth and remove anything in me that has accepted a distorted version of what Your Church is meant to be. Heal any wounds I carry from past experiences. Restore my understanding of Your design. Teach me to live as part of Your Body — to love, to serve, and to walk in truth. Guard me from deception and help me remain grounded in Your Word. Use my life to reflect what the Church was always meant to be. In Jesus holy and Almighty name. Amen.
Frequently Asked Questions:
IS THE CHURCH TODAY COMPLETELY CORRUPT?
No. There are still a few true, Spirit-led believers; however, discernment is necessary.
SHOULD I LEAVE MY CHURCH?
If necessary, yes. Seek God, test everything by Scripture, speak to the pastor, and follow only GOD’s leading.
WHY DOES CHURCH FEEL EMPTY SOMETIMES?
It’s because man’s structure without the Holy Spirit produces form without power.
WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A HEALTHY CHURCH?
Truth, humility, many types of service, discipleship, and Christ-centered living. If you see smoke machines, bands with people dressed in shabby clothes, popcorn being served, no sub-ministries that serve others in all ways, and demands for money – RUN!!!
