Too many people today are being taught to chase platforms, money, titles, influence, position, power, and personal greatness, while calling it “ministry,” “purpose,” or “blessing.” In your walk with Jesus, beginning in Christian recovery, you must learn the difference between a life that glorifies God and a life that magnifies self.

WHY IS THIS STUDY NEEDED IN RECOVERY?

This study is needed because addiction trained you to live around self.

• Self-comfort.
• Self-protection.
• Self-rule.
• Self-justification.
• Self-glory.

Then, when you come to Jesus, there is a dangerous temptation to simply dress that same old self directed life into some kind of  false religion rather than a true walk with the Lord. You may no longer chase drugs, alcohol, lust, attention, control, money, or approval the same way you once did, yet the old nature can still try to build a throne inside your heart that shows on the outside too.

That throne may not look like addiction anymore. It may look like wanting to be seen. It may look like needing to be important. It may look like wanting people to admire your testimony more than they worship the God who saved you. Recovery is not God helping you become the center of attention. Recovery is God removing you from the very core of your soul.

👉 Jesus did not set you free so you could magnify yourself with a Bible in your hand. He set you free so your whole life could glorify Him and have others see Him in you.

John the Baptist understood something many modern movements have forgotten.

• He did not say, “I must increase with Him.”
• He did not say, “My ministry must become famous.”
• He did not say, “My name must be known.”
• He did not say, “My influence must expand so people can see how anointed I am.”

He said Jesus must increase, and he must decrease.

• That is the posture of true recovery.
• That is the posture of true ministry.
• That is the posture of true worship.

👉 The more Jesus increases in your life, the less room there is for ego, pride, greed, performance, manipulation, and self-exaltation.

THE DANGER OF SELF-GLORY IN CHRISTIAN CLOTHING

One of the most dangerous things happening today is that many movements are taking worldly ambition and covering it with spiritual words. They talk about destiny, promotion, wealth, authority, platforms, influence, increase, and power, yet the cross is barely mentioned. Repentance is watered down. Holiness is pushed aside. Suffering for Christ is treated like failure. Obedience is replaced with “manifesting.” Biblical surrender is replaced with self-empowerment.

That is not Christianity. That is self-worship with religious decorations. Jesus did not call you to build your own kingdom. He called you to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Him.

“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.’”
Matthew 16:24  This verse destroys the modern message of self-magnification.

Jesus did not say, “Find yourself.” He said “deny yourself”. Jesus did not say, “Promote yourself.” He said follow Me.Jesus did not say, “Use My name to get everything your flesh wants.” He said take up your cross.

• A cross is not a stage.
• A cross is not a brand.
• A cross is not a platform.
• A cross is a place where self dies so God can be glorified.

MANY MOVEMENTS TODAY ARE GLORIFYING MAN, MONEY, POSITION, AND POWER

👉 You must be discerning. Daily, pray for God’s wisdom, understanding, and discernment.  Not everything that uses the name of Jesus is glorifying Jesus.

• Some movements glorify the preacher.
• Some glorify the prophet.
• Some glorify the “apostle.”
• Some glorify money.
• Some glorify spiritual titles.
• Some glorify signs and wonders more than obedience.
• Some glorify emotional experiences more than truth.
• Some glorify position more than humility.
• Some glorify power more than holiness.

Exercise spiritual CAUTION!

• They may speak loudly about “kingdom,” while quietly building their own.
• They may talk about “favor,” while training people to chase wealth.
• They may talk about “anointing,” while producing pride.
• They may talk about “breakthrough,” while refusing repentance.
• They may talk about “honor,” while demanding loyalty that belongs only to God.

👉 That is all dangerous. The true Holy Spirit does not lead people into self-exaltation. He glorifies Jesus.

“He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.”
John 16:14

• The Holy Spirit does not come to make you famous.
• He does not come to feed your ego.
• He does not come to help you build a spiritual image.
• He comes to glorify Jesus Christ.

🛑Any movement that constantly magnifies man, money, titles, platforms, control, and personal greatness is moving in the wrong spirit.

GOD WILL NOT SHARE HIS GLORY WITH MAN

This is where you must tremble in a holy way.

• God is loving.
• God is merciful.
• God is patient.
• God is kind.

He is also holy. He will not hand His glory to flesh.

“I am the Lord, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.”
Isaiah 42:8

This means you do not get to take credit for what only God has done.

• You did not save yourself.
• You did not deliver yourself.
• You did not break your chains by your own greatness.
• You did not resurrect your own life.

Always remember:

• Jesus rescued you.
• Jesus washed you.
• Jesus restored you.
• Jesus opened your eyes.
• Jesus gave you another chance.
• Jesus deserves the glory.

What to do when people look to you and don’t see jesus:

• When people praise your strength, point them to His grace.
• When people admire your testimony, point them to His mercy.
• When people ask how you changed, point them to the cross.
• When people see fruit in your life, point them to the Vine.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”
John 15:5

Without Him, you can do nothing.

• Not some things.
• Not spiritual things.
• Not lasting things.
• Nothing.

That truth will keep you humble.

SELF-MAGNIFICATION IS STILL BONDAGE

In recovery, and as you grow as a believer, you may think bondage only looks like substances, sexual sin, rage, lying, manipulation, or destructive habits.

• Pride is bondage too.
• Greed is bondage.
• Needing applause is bondage.
• Needing to be right is bondage.
• Needing people to see you as spiritual is bondage.
• Needing position is bondage.
• Needing control is bondage.

Self-magnification keeps you chained to the old life, even when your outward behavior looks cleaner. The enemy does not care whether you destroy yourself with addiction or religion, as long as Jesus is not truly Lord. That is why you must examine what you are really seeking.

1. Are you seeking God’s glory or your own importance?
2. Are you serving Jesus or using Jesus to feel powerful?
3. Are you walking in humility or secretly trying to be admired?
4. Are you surrendered or simply religious?

“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.”
Philippians 2:3

• Selfish ambition can hide inside ministry.
• Conceit can hide inside testimony.
• Pride can hide inside Bible knowledge.
• A desire for control can hide inside “leadership.”

That is why God deals with the heart.

THE WAY OF JESUS IS HUMILITY

Jesus had all power, all authority, all holiness, all wisdom, and all glory. Yet He humbled Himself.

“And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”
Philippians 2:8

• If Jesus humbled Himself, why would you exalt yourself?
• If Jesus served, why would you demand to be served?
• If Jesus obeyed the Father, why would you try to rule your own life?
• If Jesus carried a cross, why would you chase a crown before surrender?

The Christian life is not about becoming impressive. It is about becoming obedient. The goal is not for people to say, “Look how powerful you are.”  👉 The goal is for people to say, “Look what the Lord has done.”

RECOVERY MUST TEACH YOU TO GLORIFY GOD IN EVERYTHING

• You glorify God when you tell the truth.
• You glorify God when you repent quickly.
• You glorify God when you forgive.
• You glorify God when you walk away from sin.
• You glorify God when you stop manipulating people.
• You glorify God when you refuse to return to what He rescued you from.
• You glorify God when you serve quietly without needing attention.
• You glorify God when you choose obedience over applause.
• You glorify God when you let Jesus be the center of your story.

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 10:31

Whatever you do.

• That includes recovery.
• That includes ministry.
• That includes your testimony.
• That includes your money.
• That includes your relationships.
• That includes your work.
• That includes your private life.
• That includes your motives.

👉 Everything belongs under the glory of God.

THIS IS HOW YOU KNOW SELF IS BEING MAGNIFIED

• You may be magnifying yourself when correction offends you more than sin does.
• You may be magnifying yourself when you need people to notice your growth.
• You may be magnifying yourself when you talk more about your calling than your obedience.
• You may be magnifying yourself when you want spiritual gifts without spiritual maturity.
• You may be magnifying yourself when money, title, influence, or platform feels like proof of God’s approval.
• You may be magnifying yourself when you cannot serve unless someone sees you.
• You may be magnifying yourself when you use Christian words to defend fleshly desires.
• You may be magnifying yourself when you become angry because God is not giving you the spotlight you wanted.

🛑 That is a heart issue. God is not trying to humiliate you. He is trying to free you from the slavery of self.

THIS IS HOW YOU GLORIFY GOD INSTEAD

• You glorify God when you become small enough for Jesus to be seen clearly.
• You glorify God when you stop fighting for recognition.
• You glorify God when you obey even when nobody claps.
• You glorify God when you repent without excuses.
• You glorify God when you give Him credit for every bit of healing.
• You glorify God when you refuse to make money, power, platform, or position your god.
• You glorify God when you say, “Lord, not my will, but Yours be done.”

That must become the cry of your recovery.

• Not unto me, Lord.
• Not unto my name.
• Not unto my strength.
• Not unto my story.
• Not unto my ministry.
• Not unto my success.
• Not unto my image.

To Your name I give ALL glory.

🛑 A WORD OF WARNING

• You cannot follow Jesus and worship self at the same time.
• You cannot glorify God while secretly building your own throne.
• You cannot serve Christ while bowing to money.
• You cannot walk in holiness while craving power.
• You cannot call Jesus Lord while refusing to decrease.

“No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
Luke 16:13

Money is not evil by itself. Position is not evil by itself. Influence is not evil by itself. The danger begins when these things become your measure of worth, your proof of success, your source of security, or your secret god.

👉 The way of Jesus is not self-glory. The way of Jesus is surrender.

Abba Father,

Teach me to decrease so Jesus may increase.

Look at your motives. Ask yourself whether you are seeking obedience or attention, surrender or recognition, God’s approval or man’s applause. The fruit of glorifying God is humility, repentance, obedience, gratitude, and a life that points people to Jesus.
