WHAT DOES BEING STRONG AND COURAGEOUS REALLY MEAN?

When Yahweh told Joshua to be strong and courageous, He was not telling him to pretend he was fearless. He was calling him to take a firm grip on His Word, His command, and His promise. Biblical strength is not personality. It is not volume. It is not pride. It is a surrendered grip that refuses to let go of what God has said.

WHY THIS MATTERS IN RECOVERY

Many people think being strong means never crying, never struggling, never feeling afraid, and never admitting weakness. That is not biblical strength. In recovery, being strong and courageous means you stop gripping sin, excuses, people, substances, comfort, and control — and you begin gripping Yahweh’s Word with both hands.

  1. It means you obey while trembling.
  2. It means you keep walking when your emotions are screaming for you to turn back.
  3. It means you do not return to what Jesus delivered you from simply because the battle feels hard.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

— Joshua 1:9 NKJV

WHAT DOES “BE STRONG” MEAN IN HEBREW?

The Hebrew word often translated “be strong” in Joshua 1 is chazaq. It carries the idea of being firm, strengthened, hardened, courageous, established, and holding fast. It can also carry the sense of taking hold of something with strength — like having a firm grip. So when Yahweh told Joshua to be strong, He was not saying, “Joshua, trust your own confidence.” He was saying, in essence:

Take hold. Grip what I have spoken. Do not loosen your hold. Do not collapse. Do not let fear make you drop the promise.

👉 This is not the strength of the flesh. This is the strength of surrender.

WHAT DOES “COURAGEOUS” MEAN?

The Hebrew word translated “courageous” is amats. It means to be alert, brave, resolute, determined, and steadfast. It is not reckless courage. It is not human arrogance. It is the courage to obey Yahweh when fear, opposition, loneliness, pressure, and uncertainty are all present.

👉 Biblical courage is not the absence of fear. Biblical courage is obedience with your eyes fixed on Yahweh.

STRENGTH IS A GRIP, NOT A PERFORMANCE

Some people perform strength.

  • They act tough.
  • They hide pain.
  • They refuse correction.
  • They call stubbornness courage.
  • They confuse pride with faith.

But Joshua’s strength was not rooted in Joshua. It was rooted in Yahweh’s presence.

“No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.”— Joshua 1:5 NKJV

Joshua could be strong because Yahweh was with him. You can be strong because Yahweh is with you and because He never leaves you.

  • Not because you feel ready.
  • Not because you know every step.
  • Not because the battle looks easy..

COURAGE MEANS YOU DO NOT LET GO

In recovery, the enemy wants your grip.

  • He wants you to let go of conviction.
  • He wants you to let go of repentance.
  • He wants you to let go of obedience.
  • He wants you to let go of the fear of Yahweh.
  • He wants you to loosen your grip just enough to compromise.

But being strong and courageous means you tighten your grip on truth when temptation comes.

  • You tighten your grip when memories rise.
  • You tighten your grip when people misunderstand you.
  • You tighten your grip when the old life calls your name.
  • You tighten your grip when obedience costs you something.

“Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.”— Joshua 1:7 NKJV

🛑 Notice this carefully. Yahweh connected courage to obedience.

  • Not feelings.
  • Not motivation.
  • Not religious talk.

Obedience. Please read that again.

BEING STRONG DOES NOT MEAN YOU FEEL STRONG

  • You may feel weak and still be strong.
  • You may feel afraid and still be courageous.
  • You may feel overwhelmed and still obey.
  • You may feel tempted and still refuse sin.
  • You may feel alone and still keep walking with Jesus.

Strength is not proven by how loudly you speak. Strength is proven by what you refuse to return to.

Courage is not proven by how confident you look. Courage is proven by whether you obey God when disobedience would be easier.

THE COMMAND COMES WITH A PROMISE

Yahweh did not say, “Be strong and courageous, Joshua, because you are impressive.” He said it because Joshua had a command, a calling, a battle, and a promise. The same is true for you.

If Jesus has called you out of addiction, bondage, compromise, double-mindedness, deception, or destruction, then you are not called to drift. You are called to grip the Word of God and walk forward.

“The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song I will praise Him.”— Psalm 28:7 NKJV

  • Your strength is not in your past.
  • Your strength is not in your willpower.
  • Your strength is not in a program.
  • Your strength is not in a label.
  • Your strength is in Yahweh.

GOAL FOR TODAY

🎯 Today, identify one thing you have been gripping that Yahweh is telling you to release — and one truth from His Word you need to grip instead.

Write it down. Pray over it. Then obey.

PRAYER

Abba Father,

Teach me what it really means to be strong and courageous.

Strip away every false version of strength in me. Remove pride, stubbornness, self-protection, fear, excuses, and the need to look strong in front of people.

Help me take a firm grip on Your Word. Help me hold tightly to what You have spoken. Help me release everything I have been gripping that is pulling me away from obedience.

When I feel afraid, remind me that courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is obeying You because You are with me.

Strengthen my heart. Strengthen my mind. Strengthen my walk. Make me steadfast, alert, obedient, and surrendered.

I will not go back to what You delivered me from.

I will not loosen my grip on truth.

I will not turn to the right or to the left.

I choose to follow You.

In Jesus’ holy and Almighty name,
Amen.
