WHY THIS MATTERS IN RECOVERY
Addiction teaches people how to say the right things while hiding the wrong things. A person can say, “I want freedom,” while still protecting the sin that keeps them bound. A person can say, “I love Jesus,” while refusing to surrender the very thing He is correcting. A person can speak holy words, quote Scripture, attend church, and still have a heart that is distant, divided, and dishonest before Yahweh.
👉Jesus did not rebuke people for having imperfect words. He rebuked them for having religious lips and rebellious hearts.
“These people draw near to Me with their mouth,
And honor Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.”
Matthew 15:8 NKJV
Jesus was quoting the prophet Isaiah when He said this. Yahweh had already exposed this same problem long before: people were saying the right things, performing the right religious actions, and appearing devoted outwardly, but inwardly they were not truly surrendered. 🚨This is one of the most dangerous places a person can be spiritually: close enough to speak about God, but far enough away to ignore Him.
“Therefore the Lord said: ‘Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths
And honor Me with their lips,
But have removed their hearts far from Me,
And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men.’”
Isaiah 29:13 NKJV
- Lip-honor is easy. Heart-surrender is costly.
- Lip-honor says, “Lord, I love You.”
Heart-surrender says, “Lord, change what I still want to keep.” - Lip-honor says, “I believe.”
Heart-surrender says, “I will obey.” - Lip-honor says, “I’m sorry.”
Heart-surrender says, “I am turning around.”
This matters deeply in recovery because real freedom does not come from saying the right recovery words. It comes from repentance, obedience, truth, and total surrender to Jesus Christ.
“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?”
Luke 6:46 NKJV
Jesus is not impressed by spiritual talk that is not followed by obedience. Calling Him Lord means He has authority over the hidden places too: the cravings, the excuses, the relationships, the secret compromises, the double life, the bitterness, the self-pity, and the sin we have renamed as “struggle.” Yahweh does not want performance. He wants the heart.
“My son, give me your heart,
And let your eyes observe my ways.”
Proverbs 23:26 NKJV
That is where freedom begins.
- Not with polished words.
- Not with religious appearances.
- Not with emotional promises.
👉Freedom begins when the heart finally stops pretending and says, “Jesus, I give You the truth. I give You the hidden thing. I give You the part of me that has been far from You.”
WHEN THE HEART IS FAR AWAY
- A far heart may still pray.
- A far heart may still post Bible verses.
- A far heart may still attend church.
- A far heart may still talk about change.
But a far heart resists correction. It protects idols. It argues with conviction. It wants Jesus as Savior, but not as Lord. It wants comfort without crucifixion. It wants healing without repentance. It wants freedom without surrender. That is not recovery. That is religion wrapped around bondage.
👉Jesus came to do more than improve our speech. He came to make us new.
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners;
and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
James 4:8 NKJV
Notice that Scripture does not say, “Just say more religious things.” It says draw near. Cleanse your hands. Purify your hearts. That means the mouth and the heart must finally agree.
THE HEART MUST MATCH THE CONFESSION
There is a holy place where the mouth and the heart come into agreement.
- That is where confession becomes real.
- That is where repentance becomes more than regret.
- That is where worship becomes more than music.
- That is where recovery becomes transformation.
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.”
Psalm 19:14 NKJV
This should be the cry of every believer: “Yahweh, do not let me honor You with words while resisting You in my heart.” The goal is not to sound surrendered. The goal is to be surrendered.
SELF-EXAMINATION QUESTIONS
- Am I saying the right things to God while hiding something from Him?
- Where have my lips said “yes,” but my heart has said “not that”?
- Do I call Jesus Lord while still refusing to obey Him in one specific area?
- Am I more concerned with looking spiritual than actually being surrendered?
- What sin, habit, relationship, excuse, or attitude keeps pulling my heart away from Yahweh?
- Have I mistaken religious language for true repentance?
- What would change today if my heart fully agreed with my confession?
GOAL FOR TODAY
Ask Yahweh to show you one area where your mouth and heart are not in agreement, then surrender that area to Jesus without defending it.
BIBLE VERSES FOR MEDITATION
“Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life.”
Proverbs 4:23 NKJV
“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalm 139:23-24 NKJV
“Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.”
Matthew 5:8 NKJV
PRAYER
Abba Father,
I do not want to honor You with my lips while my heart is far from You.
Search me and show me the truth. Show me where I have said the right things but resisted Your correction. Show me where I have used spiritual words while still protecting sin, pride, fear, bitterness, rebellion, or compromise.
I do not want religion. I want You.
I give You my heart again today. Cleanse what is unclean. Expose what is hidden. Break what is false. Bring my words, my thoughts, my choices, and my desires into agreement with Your will.
Jesus, be Lord over every part of me, not just the parts I am willing to show people.
Teach me to worship You in truth. Teach me to obey You from the heart. Teach me to walk in real surrender, not appearance.
In Jesus’ holy and Almighty name,
Amen.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What does “honors Me with their lips” mean?
It means a person can speak respectful, religious, or worshipful words toward God while their inward life is not truly surrendered to Him.
Can someone look spiritual and still have a heart far from God?
Yes. Jesus was speaking to religious people who appeared devoted outwardly but were resisting God inwardly.
Why is this important in recovery?
Because real recovery requires truth. A person cannot be free while pretending, hiding, excusing, or saying the right words without true repentance.
Does God want perfect people?
No. Yahweh is not looking for performance. He is looking for a surrendered heart that responds honestly to Him.
How do I bring my heart back to God?
Start with honest confession. Stop defending the hidden thing. Repent, surrender it to Jesus, and obey what He is showing you today.
