WHY THIS MATTERS IN RECOVERY
When Yahweh says, “Be holy, for I am holy,” He is not telling us to act religious, look perfect, or pretend we never struggle. He is calling us to be set apart. That means we no longer belong to the old life, the old cravings, the old agreements, the old rebellion, or the old identity. We belong to Yahweh now. Holiness is not a costume. Holiness is ownership. It means, “I am no longer common. I have been separated unto God.”
Addiction trains a person to live common, careless, impulsive, secretive, and enslaved. Yahweh calls His people out of that and says, “You are Mine. Now live like you belong to Me.”
“Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.’”
— Leviticus 19:2 NKJV
WHAT DOES HOLY MEAN?
The Hebrew word often translated holy is qadosh. Remember that none of our English bibles are original; they have ALL been translated by a group of people who decided which words are probably best for the context. Only the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic manuscripts are original. We MUST go to the language the bible was written in to see the true meanings of words.
Qadosh (holy) means set apart, sacred, consecrated, separated for God’s purpose.
👉Holiness is not mainly about looking spiritual on the outside. It is about belonging to Yahweh on the inside and then letting that belonging change how we live.
To be holy means:
- You are no longer available for everything.
- You are no longer ruled by every desire.
- You are no longer owned by sin.
- You are no longer living as if your body, mind, mouth, choices, and future belong to you.
- You have been set apart for Yahweh.
HOLINESS IS NOT LEGALISM
Some people hear the word holy and immediately think of harsh rules, pride, religious control, or man-made traditions. But biblical holiness is not legalism.
Legalism says, “I obey so God will accept me.” Holiness says, “God has called me His own, so I will not keep living like I belong to darkness.” There is a huge difference. Yahweh does not call us to holiness to crush us. He calls us to holiness to free us.
“As obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.”— 1 Peter 1:14–15 NKJV
HOLINESS MEANS SEPARATION FROM THE OLD LIFE
Recovery cannot be real if we keep making room for the thing that enslaved us. Many people want deliverance without separation. They want freedom while still protecting the door that leads back to bondage. Yahweh says we are to be holy. That means some things must become off-limits.
- Old contacts.
- Old substances.
- Old excuses.
- Old entertainment.
- Old hiding places.
- Old thought patterns.
- Old “just this once” agreements.
Holiness means I do not keep fellowship with the thing Jesus delivered me from.
“Therefore ‘Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.’” — 2 Corinthians 6:17 NKJV
HOLINESS IS ABOUT WHO OWNS YOU
One of the clearest ways to understand holiness is this: Holy things belong to God.
That means
- Your body is not just a body. It is to be offered to Him.
- Your mouth is not just a mouth. It is to speak truth.
- Your mind is not just a battlefield. It is to be renewed.
- Your life is not just yours to manage. It is His to lead.
“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” — 1 Corinthians 6:19 NKJV
👉That one verse destroys the lie of addiction. Addiction says, “It is my body. It is my choice. I can do what I want.” Yahweh says, “You are not your own.”
That is not bondage. That is rescue.
HOLINESS IS NOT PERFECTION — BUT IT IS DIRECTION
Being holy does not mean you never need correction. It does not mean you never feel temptation.
It does not mean you never have to repent. But it does mean you stop defending what Yahweh calls sin.
- It means your heart is turned toward Him.
- It means when you fall, you do not build a house there.
- It means you agree with Yahweh instead of negotiating with darkness.
“For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:7 NKJV
Yahweh’s call is not for us to be half-clean, half-compromised, half-surrendered, and half-free. He calls us into holiness because He calls us into Himself.
HOLINESS WILL COST YOU SOMETHING
Holiness will cost you.
- It will cost you popularity.
- It may cost you relationships.
- It may cost you old comforts.
- It may cost you false peace.
- It may cost you the version of yourself that people preferred when you were easier to control.
But what holiness costs you is nothing compared to what compromise steals from you.
- Compromise steals peace.
- Compromise steals clarity.
- Compromise steals authority.
- Compromise steals recovery.
- Compromise steals intimacy with Yahweh.
“Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.”— Hebrews 12:14 NKJV
⭐⭐⭐That verse should sober us. Holiness is not optional decoration on the Christian life. It is part of truly belonging to Yahweh.
WHAT HOLINESS LOOKS LIKE IN REAL LIFE
- Holiness looks like telling the truth when lying would protect your image.
- Holiness looks like deleting the contact that keeps pulling you backward.
- Holiness looks like refusing the substance, even when nobody would know.
- Holiness looks like choosing obedience when your flesh wants relief.
- Holiness looks like walking away from entertainment that feeds lust, violence, rebellion, or darkness.
- Holiness looks like asking Yahweh, “Does this please You?” before asking, “Can I get away with this?”
- Holiness is not just what you avoid. It is Who you belong to.
SELF-EXAMINATION QUESTIONS
- Where am I still treating something unclean as if it is acceptable?
- What part of my old life am I still protecting?
- Have I confused holiness with religious appearance instead of true surrender?
- Where am I asking Yahweh to bless what He is telling me to leave?
- What do my choices say about who owns me?
- Am I willing to be different if being different means I belong fully to Yahweh?
- What is one area where I need to stop negotiating and start obeying?
GOAL FOR TODAY
Ask Yahweh to show you one area of your life that is not fully set apart to Him, and take one clear step of obedience today.
VERSES FOR MEDITATION
“Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the LORD your God.”— Leviticus 20:7 NKJV
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality.”— 1 Thessalonians 4:3 NKJV
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”— Romans 12:1 NKJV
PRAYER
Abba Father,
I do not want to be common, careless, or compromised. I want to belong fully to You.
Show me where I have allowed the old life to remain. Show me where I have made excuses for what You have called unclean. Show me where I have tried to follow You while still holding hands with the thing You delivered me from.
I surrender my body, my mind, my mouth, my choices, my habits, my relationships, and my future to You.
Make me holy because You are holy. Set me apart for Your purpose. Teach me to love what You love and hate what You hate.
I do not want religious appearance. I want true surrender.
Thank You for calling me out of darkness and into Your light.
In Jesus’ holy and Almighty name,
Amen.

The Hebrew word often translated holy is qadosh, meaning set apart, sacred, consecrated, or separated for God’s purpose.
