STOP AGREEING WITH BONDAGE

WHY THIS MATTERS IN RECOVERY

One of the most dangerous things a person can do in recovery is keep agreeing with the very bondage Jesus came to break. Many people say, “I am an addict,” “I will always struggle,” “This is just who I am,” or “Recovery is for life.” But if Jesus Christ has come to set the captive free, why would we keep signing our name to captivity?

Bondage does not only hold people through substances, habits, lusts, fear, shame, or lies. Bondage also holds people through agreement. What you continue to agree with, you often continue to obey.

🔥Jesus did not come to rename your chains. He came to break them.

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

John 8:36, NKJV

Bondage always wants and needs your agreement. It wants you to call yourself by your sin. It wants you to build your identity around your past. It wants you to believe freedom is too good, too far, too hard, or too late. But Jesus never told people to make peace with their chains. He commanded healing, freedom, repentance, obedience, and new life.

The enemy knows something many believers forget: words matter. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”— Proverbs 18:21, NKJV

When you keep saying, “I am powerless,” you are agreeing with weakness instead of surrendering to Christ’s power. When you keep saying, “I will always be this way,” you are agreeing with bondage instead of the new creation Jesus made possible. When you keep saying, “This is my disease,” you may be giving a permanent name to something Jesus died to destroy.

⭐Jesus did not die so you could manage bondage with religious language. He came to deliver you from the power of darkness.

“He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.”— Colossians 1:13, NKJV

That means you are not obligated to agree with the old life anymore. You are not obligated to bow to the cravings. You are not obligated to obey the shame. You are not obligated to repeat what the world says about addiction when the Word of God says freedom is possible through Jesus Christ.

But ~

  • You must stop agreeing with bondage.
  • You must stop rehearsing the enemy’s labels.
  • You must stop protecting the excuses.
  • You must stop speaking death over your own life.
  • You must stop calling captivity your identity.

The Word of God says that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”— 2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJV

That does not mean you pretend the battle never existed.

  • It means you stop letting the battle define who you are.
  • It means you stop confessing loyalty to the thing Jesus is calling you out of.
  • It means you no longer give your past the authority to name your future.

There is a difference between honesty and agreement.

  • Honesty says, “I have sinned, and I need Jesus.” Agreement with bondage says, “This sin owns me.”
  • Honesty says, “I have struggled, but I am submitted to Jesus Christ.” Agreement with bondage says, “I will always be a slave to this.”
  • Honesty brings confession, repentance, surrender, and healing. Agreement with bondage keeps the chain polished, named, protected, and accepted.

Jesus is not asking you to lie about where you have been. He is calling you to stop agreeing that you must stay there.

STOP SAYING WHAT GOD NEVER SAID

  • God did not say you are permanently bound.
  • God did not say addiction is your identity.
  • God did not say your past has more power than the blood of Jesus.
  • God did not say you are powerless when His Spirit lives in those who belong to Him.
  • God did not say you must spend the rest of your life introducing yourself by the sin He wants to free you from.

The world may say that. Programs may say that. Your emotions may say that. Your past may scream that. But Jesus says:

“If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”— John 8:31-32, NKJV

Truth makes you free. Lies keep you bound.

👉So ask yourself honestly: What have I been agreeing with that Jesus wants me to renounce?

SELF-EXAMINATION QUESTIONS

Have I been calling myself by the name of my bondage instead of who I am called to be in Christ?

What sentence do I keep speaking over myself that does not agree with the Word of God?

Am I confusing honesty about my past with agreement that I must remain bound?

Have I accepted a label that Jesus never gave me?

Do I secretly believe Jesus can forgive me, but not fully free me?

What excuse have I protected because it allows me to stay comfortable in bondage?

Am I willing to repent not only for the sin, but also for agreeing with the lie that the sin owns me?

GOAL FOR TODAY

Today, 🛑stop speaking one phrase that agrees with bondage, and replace it with the truth of God’s Word.

Do not say, “I am an addict.” Say, “I was bound, but Jesus Christ came to make me free.”

Do not say, “I will always struggle.” Say, “The Son makes free indeed.”

Do not say, “This is just who I am.” Say, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”

BIBLE VERSES FOR MEDITATION

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”  Galatians 5:1, NKJV

“For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”  Romans 6:14, NKJV

“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”    1 John 4:4, NKJV

PRAYER

Abba Father,
I come to You in the name of Jesus Christ. I confess that I have agreed with lies, labels, fear, shame, and bondage instead of fully agreeing with Your Word.

Forgive me for speaking death over my own life. Forgive me for calling myself by what You came to deliver me from. Forgive me for believing that my past, my cravings, my weakness, or my sin had more power than Your Son.

Today, I renounce every agreement I have made with bondage. I renounce every label that does not come from You. I renounce every lie that says I cannot be free.

Lord Jesus, teach me to speak truth. Teach me to walk in obedience. Teach me to abide in Your Word. I do not want to manage chains. I want to be free.

Make me clean. Make me whole. Make me new. Strengthen me to stop agreeing with bondage and start agreeing with You.

In Jesus’ holy and Almighty name,
Amen.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is it wrong to admit I have struggled with addiction?

No. It is not wrong to be honest. Confession is biblical. The danger is when honesty becomes identity. You can admit where you have been without agreeing that bondage owns you.

Why does it matter what I call myself?

Because words reveal agreement. When your words constantly agree with defeat, bondage, and shame, they can keep your mind tied to the old life. God calls His people to speak truth, not death.

Does Jesus really set people free from addiction?

Yes. Jesus Christ has authority over sin, bondage, darkness, and every chain. Freedom requires repentance, surrender, obedience, and abiding in Him — but His power is greater than bondage.

What if I still feel tempted?

Temptation does not mean you are still a slave. Temptation is a battle. Agreement is surrender. Do not agree with the temptation. Bring it to Jesus, resist the devil, and obey the Word of God.

What should I say instead of “I am an addict”?

Say what agrees with Scripture: “I was bound, but Jesus is setting me free.” “I am a new creation in Christ.” “Sin shall not have dominion over me.” “The Son makes free indeed.”
