The drug is not the deepest battle. Neither is the alcohol, the pill, the pornography, the gambling, or whatever you once used to escape. Those things are just where the battle shows up.
The real battle is over who gets your heart, your trust, and your obedience when life hurts.
“You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3 NKJV)
Addiction promises relief. It whispers, “Come to me. I’ll calm you down. I’ll numb this. I’ll make this easier.” The thing is that every time you believe that lie, something created is being asked to do what only Yahweh was meant to do. That is why merely removing the substance is not enough.
You can put down the bottle and still worship comfort. You can stop using drugs and still run to anger, food, relationships, isolation, entertainment, control, or anything else that keeps you from facing God with an open heart. The substance may change while the idol remains.
“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36 NKJV)
Yeshua did not come merely to make you sober.
He came to make you free.
- Free from the lie that you need something besides Him to survive your pain.
- Free from bowing to cravings.
- Free from being controlled by feelings.
- Free from running every time life becomes uncomfortable.
The battle is not ultimately about whether you use again. The battle is about whether Jesus is truly Lord when the pressure hits.
TODAY’S CHALLENGE
Ask yourself one hard question: When I hurt, what do I instinctively run to before I run to God?
Whatever your answer is, that may be where the real battle is.
- Bring it into the light.
- Surrender it.
- And stop giving created things the place that belongs to Yahweh alone.
PRAYER
Abba Father, expose anything I still run to instead of You. I refuse to exchange one bondage for another or simply rename my idols. Teach me to trust You when I hurt, obey You when I am uncomfortable, and seek You before every false refuge. Jesus, be Lord over my cravings, my emotions, my thoughts, and every area of my life. In Jesus’ holy and Almighty name, amen.
