Fear of relapse can become its own kind of bondage. You may have been told to expect relapse. You may have heard that addiction will always be waiting for you, that you will always be “in recovery,” and that one bad day could send you right back where you started.
BUT is that how a child of the King is supposed to live? Jesus did not set you free so you could spend the rest of your life terrified that your chains might somehow find you again.
Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
~ John 8:36 NKJV
If you belong to Jesus Christ, your past does not own you. The substance does not own you. The old cravings do not get to dictate your future. You are not powerless. You belong to the Almighty.
That does not mean you become careless. You still guard your heart, renew your mind, stay in the Word, pray, and refuse to entertain the thoughts and behaviors that once led you into bondage.
But there is a tremendous difference between walking carefully and living afraid. Fear says, *“What if I relapse?” *Faith says, **“I am going to keep following Jesus.” **Scripture says:
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
~ 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
Stop rehearsing a relapse that hasn’t happened. Stop expecting yourself to fail. Keep your eyes on Yeshua and keep walking forward. You are not trying to survive another day without your addiction. You are learning how to live as someone who has been made free.
GOAL FOR TODAY
When the thought “What if I relapse?” enters your mind, replace it with: “Jesus Christ has made me free, and today I choose to walk in that freedom.”
PRAYER
Abba Father, I refuse to live afraid of returning to the bondage You brought me out of. Help me keep my eyes on You instead of on my past. Strengthen me to reject every lie, temptation, and fearful thought that tells me failure is inevitable. Teach me to walk boldly, wisely, and faithfully in the freedom Yeshua has given me. I belong to You. In Jesus’ holy and Almighty name, amen.
