ARE FORGIVE & FORGET THE SAME?

“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”

Ephesians 4:32, NKJV

Forgiving and forgetting are not the same. Forgiveness means releasing your claim to personal revenge and entrusting justice to God. Forgetting means no longer remembering. Scripture calls us to forgive; it does not require us to erase our memories, excuse wrongdoing, or immediately restore trust.

In recovery, painful memories can stir anger, shame, and the temptation to escape. But remembering an injury does not automatically mean you have failed to forgive. When the memory returns, you can bring that hurt to Jesus again without feeding bitterness or acting on revenge. You can also remember what happened so that you recognize harmful patterns and maintain wise boundaries. Forgiveness can be offered while trust still needs to be rebuilt through truth, repentance, and consistent change.

You cannot always control what you remember, but you can choose how you respond. Let Jesus heal the wound and guide your next step. Freedom does not require pretending the past never happened.

GOAL FOR TODAY: Bring one painful memory to Jesus. Ask Him to help you release revenge, resist bitterness, and respond with wisdom.

PRAYER: Abba Father, You know what happened and how deeply it hurt. Help me forgive as You have forgiven me. Heal my heart, uproot bitterness, and teach me to walk in love with wise boundaries. When memories return, help me turn to You instead of seeking escape, in Jesus’ holy and Almighty name, amen.
