WHEN CHURCH BECOMES A THEATER OF WORLDLY ENTERTAINMENT

WHEN DID WE STOP TREMBLING BEFORE OUR HOLY GOD AND START EXPECTING HIM TO ENTERTAIN US?

Ten-minute sermons. Smoke machines. Flashing stage lights. Praise bands dressed to attract attention rather than demonstrate modesty. Music that sounds more like a worldly concert than worship. Coffee bars, snacks, and refreshments that make the sanctuary feel like a movie theater. The congregation is entertained. The atmosphere is exciting. Everyone leaves feeling good. How many leave convicted of sin, challenged to repent, or determined to live holy lives?

When did worship become a production? When did the preaching of Yahweh’s Word become something squeezed between performances? Perhaps the most disturbing question of all: IF THE HOLY SPIRIT WERE NO LONGER WELCOME IN A CHURCH, WOULD ANYONE NOTICE AS LONG AS THE SHOW CONTINUED?

WHY THIS MATTERS IN RECOVERY

If you’re recovering from addiction, you don’t need another place that feeds your desire for excitement, stimulation, and emotional highs. You need truth that confronts sin, produces repentance, renews your mind, and teaches you to walk in obedience to Yeshua. A church that entertains you without discipling you may leave you spiritually hungry while convincing you that you’ve been fed. You cannot overcome bondage by replacing one form of worldly stimulation with another.

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears,”

2 Timothy 4:3

Paul continues by warning that people will gather teachers who satisfy their desires, turn away from truth, and embrace falsehood. The danger isn’t simply that churches may stop preaching truth. It’s that congregations may stop wanting to hear it.

WHEN ENTERTAINMENT REPLACES HOLINESS

There’s nothing inherently sinful about a microphone, musical instruments, a short sermon, or refreshments. Even modern technology can serve a legitimate purpose. The problem begins when these things become more important than the Word of Yahweh.

When appearance becomes more important than modesty. When emotional excitement is confused with the presence of the Holy Spirit. When sermons become motivational speeches that rarely mention sin, judgment, repentance, obedience, or the coming return of Yeshua. When worship leaders perform as though the congregation is their audience, forgetting that worship belongs to Yahweh alone. When churches become afraid to offend the very people they were commanded to call to repentance.

A congregation can be emotionally moved without being spiritually transformed.

You can cry during a song and return to the same unrepentant sin. You can raise your hands in worship while refusing to surrender your heart. You can attend church every Sunday and remain a stranger to genuine obedience. And you can leave a building feeling wonderful without having encountered one uncomfortable truth about your spiritual condition.

THE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH IS NOT TO MAKE SINNERS COMFORTABLE IN THEIR SIN. IT IS TO PROCLAIM YESHUA, TEACH HIS WORD, AND MAKE DISCIPLES.

HAVE WE FORGOTTEN WHO YAHWEH IS?

Yahweh is holy. He is not impressed by attendance figures, elaborate stages, professional musicians, or impressive productions. He examines hearts.

The early believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ doctrine, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer. Their strength was not found in entertainment but in their devotion to Yeshua. Consider what happens when a church emphasizes attracting crowds without equally emphasizing making disciples. People may learn how to participate in religious activities without learning how to deny themselves, take up their crosses, and follow Yeshua.

A packed church is not necessarily a spiritually healthy church. A small congregation is not necessarily a faithful one. The measure is faithfulness to Yahweh’s Word.

Before condemning another congregation, we must examine our own hearts. Are we attending to worship Yahweh or to enjoy an experience? Are we seeking truth, even when it exposes our sins?

IF WE REQUIRE THE CHURCH TO ENTERTAIN US BEFORE WE WILL LISTEN TO YAHWEH, WHO ARE WE REALLY WORSHIPING?

RECOVERY-FOCUSED SELF-EXAMINATION

  1. Am I seeking a church that teaches genuine repentance or one that makes me feel comfortable?
  2. Do I confuse an emotional experience with true spiritual transformation?
  3. Am I willing to hear biblical correction when it exposes sinful habits or compromises?
  4. Have I replaced worldly entertainment with religious entertainment without changing my heart?
  5. Does my church encourage obedience, holiness, accountability, and spiritual maturity?
  6. Am I studying Scripture personally, or depending entirely on brief Sunday messages?
  7. If the music, lights, activities, and refreshments disappeared, would my desire to worship Yahweh remain just as strong?

SCRIPTURES TO MEDITATE ON

PRAYER

Abba Father,

Forgive me for the times I have been more interested in feeling good than becoming holy. Forgive me whenever I have confused entertainment with worship or emotional excitement with the work of Your Holy Spirit. Give me discernment to recognize sound doctrine, courage to reject compromise, and humility to examine my own heart before criticizing others. Lead me to fellowship where Your Word is honored, repentance is preached, Yeshua is exalted, and genuine discipleship produces lasting fruit.

Never allow me to become so accustomed to worldly entertainment that I lose my reverence for Your holiness. Keep my heart hungry for truth, even when that truth is uncomfortable. I surrender my preferences, traditions, and expectations to You, in Jesus holy Almighty name. Amen.

GOAL FOR TODAY

EXAMINE WHAT YOU EXPECT FROM CHURCH

  • Ask yourself whether you are seeking a spiritual experience or a transformed life.
  • Read Acts 2:42–47 and compare the priorities of the early believers with what you see in congregations today.
  • Then ask Yahweh to reveal any compromise in your own worship, obedience, or relationship with Him.
  • Don’t search for a church that makes you feel good. Seek faithful fellowship that helps you become more like Yeshua.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Is contemporary worship music automatically sinful?

The question is whether the lyrics are biblically sound, the presentation honors Yahweh, and worship directs attention toward Him rather than the performers.

2. Is a ten-minute sermon always wrong?

The concern is when Scripture is consistently reduced to a few inspirational thoughts while substantial teaching is neglected.

3. Are smoke machines, stage lighting, and refreshments inherently unholy?

The important question is whether these things serve Yahweh or do they contribute to a culture that prioritizes spectacle and entertainment over reverence, truth, and discipleship.

4. Should Christians leave churches that emphasize entertainment?

Examine the church’s doctrine, leadership, spiritual fruit, and commitment to Scripture. Seek biblical clarification where appropriate. If a congregation persistently abandons sound doctrine or refuses correction, seek faithful fellowship elsewhere.

5. What should we look for in a biblically faithful church?

Look for accurate teaching of Scripture, genuine worship, prayer, accountability, repentance, love, spiritual maturity, and a commitment to making disciples who obey Yeshua.

ONE FINAL THOUGHT

WHEN A CHURCH MUST KEEP PEOPLE ENTERTAINED TO KEEP THEM ATTENDING, IT MAY HAVE FORGOTTEN THAT ITS MISSION IS NOT TO FILL SEATS, BUT TO MAKE DISCIPLES.

YAHWEH NEVER CALLED HIS CHURCH TO COMPETE WITH THE WORLD. HE CALLED HIS PEOPLE TO BE SET APART FROM IT.
