JESUS CULTLURE OR TRUE SUBMISSION?

It’s possible to look like a Christian, talk like a Christian, surround yourself with Christian content—and still not actually be following Jesus. Culture can imitate transformation, but it cannot replace surrender. And in recovery, that difference is everything.

WHY IS THIS STUDY NEEDED IN RECOVERY?

Many people leave addiction and step into a “Christian environment”…

…but never truly surrender to Jesus.

They:

  • listen to Christian music
  • follow Christian influencers
  • use Christian language
  • attend church

But their life remains unchanged at the core.

Why?  Because culture is external.  Jesus transforms internal.  If you confuse the two, you may believe you’re growing—when you’re actually just blending in.  And that will keep you stuck.

“These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.”

Matthew 15:8 NKJV

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JESUS AND CULTURE

Christian culture is comfortable.  Following Jesus will cost you everything.

CULTURE LOOKS RIGHT—BUT DOESN’T REQUIRE CHANGE

You can participate in Christian culture without confronting your sin.  You can:

  • attend
  • listen
  • agree
  • repeat phrases

…and still remain the same.

“Having a form of godliness but denying its power…”
2 Timothy 3:5 NKJV

Culture gives the appearance of transformation.  Jesus produces the reality of it.

JESUS DEMANDS SURRENDER

Following Jesus is not casual.  It is not partial.  It is not convenient.

“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
Luke 9:23 NKJV

That means:

  • your will is no longer first
  • your desires are no longer in charge
  • your life is no longer your own

Culture will never ask that of you.  Jesus will.

CULTURE COMFORTS—JESUS CONVICTS

If everything you’re hearing makes you feel comfortable… something is wrong.  Jesus will:

  • correct you
  • challenge you
  • expose things in you
  • call you higher

“For whom the Lord loves He chastens…”
Hebrews 12:6 NKJV

Culture often avoids conviction.  Jesus leads you through it.

CULTURE KEEPS YOU BUSY—JESUS CHANGES YOU

You can be busy with:

  • content
  • sermons
  • discussions
  • community

…and still not be transformed.  Because activity is not the same as obedience.

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
James 1:22 NKJV

Jesus is not calling you to consume.  He is calling you to follow.

THE HARD TRUTH

You can surround yourself with everything “Christian”… and still not belong to Christ.

If there is no:

  • surrender
  • obedience
  • transformation

Then something is missing.

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father…”
Matthew 7:21 NKJV

This is not about appearance.  It is about alignment.

WHAT FOLLOWING JESUS ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE

Following Jesus looks like:

  • daily surrender
  • obedience even when it’s hard
  • turning quickly when convicted
  • living set apart from the world
  • putting Him above everything

It is not perfect—but it is real.

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
John 10:27 NKJV

WHAT CULTURE-BASED FAITH LOOKS LIKE

Be honest.  Culture-based faith often looks like:

  • selective obedience
  • emotional connection without change
  • identifying as Christian without living it
  • comfort over conviction
  • compromise that is explained away

And in recovery—that leads right back into bondage.

PRAYER

Abba Father,

I come before You in honesty. Show me where I have been following comfort instead of following You. Reveal any place in my life where I have chosen culture over true surrender.

I don’t want to just look like a believer—I want to live as one. Change my heart. Strengthen me to obey You fully, even when it’s difficult. Remove anything in me that resists Your truth.

Teach me to follow You daily, not partially, but completely. I surrender my life again—my will, my desires, and my direction.

In Jesus holy name, Amen.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can someone be part of Christian culture but not truly follow Jesus?
Yes. Culture can mimic Christianity externally, but true following requires surrender and obedience.

What’s the difference between belief and following?
Belief acknowledges Jesus. Following obeys Him.

Why is this important in recovery?
Because surface-level faith will not sustain real transformation or lasting freedom.

How do I know if I’m truly following Jesus?
Look at your obedience, your surrender, and the direction of your life—not just your words.
